{"id":640476,"date":"2026-05-01T09:31:32","date_gmt":"2026-05-01T09:31:32","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/640476\/"},"modified":"2026-05-01T09:31:32","modified_gmt":"2026-05-01T09:31:32","slug":"sask-finance-minister-finds-interesting-things-in-federal-spring-economic-update","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/640476\/","title":{"rendered":"Sask. finance minister finds \u2018interesting\u2019 things in federal spring economic update"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>On Tuesday, the federal government gave its <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cjme.com\/2026\/04\/28\/big-spending-smaller-deficit-key-numbers-from-the-spring-economic-update\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">spring economic update<\/a> and Saskatchewan\u2019s finance minister said it included some interesting things.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPleased to see contribution rates on CPP (lowered), I think (that) will be helpful for business,\u201d Minister Jim Reiter commented. \u201cExtra investment in the trades and training, I think that will be helpful.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The update said the base contribution rate will be lowered to 9.5 per cent.<\/p>\n<p>Read more:<\/p>\n<p>More details were also released on Wednesday about increased money and opportunities available to entice workers into the trades. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pm.gc.ca\/en\/news\/news-releases\/2026\/04\/29\/prime-minister-carney-announces-team-canada-strong-nationwide-plan\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">The initiative includes<\/a> job-ready placements in the trades, more funding for training and an apprenticeship completion bonus.<\/p>\n<p>Reiter said the province is in talks with the federal government about how to make sure Saskatchewan can access trade supports.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou\u2019ve heard many times, the premier, myself, my colleagues have talked about all the big projects coming on stream \u2013 there\u2019s going to be a huge demand for the trades, so we need those training dollars,\u201d he explained.<\/p>\n<p>However, Reiter said the key part of the update was actually announced even earlier \u2013 the sovereign wealth fund. He\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cjme.com\/2026\/04\/27\/a-good-discussion-to-have-premier-approves-of-federal-sovereign-wealth-fund\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">echoed the premier\u2019s comments<\/a> earlier in the week about that, saying changes to the regulatory regime will be even more important in attracting investment in large projects and growing the economy.<\/p>\n<p>According to the update, the federal government is expecting to run a $66.9 billion deficit for the fiscal year, which is less than what was first thought.<\/p>\n<p>The Sask.
