{"id":640694,"date":"2026-05-01T11:56:11","date_gmt":"2026-05-01T11:56:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/640694\/"},"modified":"2026-05-01T11:56:11","modified_gmt":"2026-05-01T11:56:11","slug":"toronto-zoo-announces-birth-of-new-bactrian-camel-calf","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/640694\/","title":{"rendered":"Toronto Zoo announces birth of new Bactrian camel calf"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"c-paragraph\">The Toronto Zoo has <a href=\"https:\/\/www.torontozoo.com\/mediaroom\/press2026\/20260501#press\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.torontozoo.com\/mediaroom\/press2026\/20260501#press\">announced the birth<\/a> of a new Bactrian camel calf. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">The calf was born at around 7 a.m. on Thursday and stood for the first time about two hours later. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">Toronto Zoo CEO Dolf DeJong said in a press release that the birth represents an \u201cincredible addition\u201d given the fact that Bactrian camels are currently classified as a critically endangered species.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\"> \u201cThis little one\u2019s birth right in the habitat this morning reinforces our commitment as wildlife advocates and also serves as a reminder about how each visit to your Toronto Zoo can be filled with special moments, and something new,\u201d he said in a press release. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">The arrival of the new calf brings the total number of Bactrian camels at the Toronto Zoo to seven. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">Zoo officials say that there are currently fewer than 950 Bactrian\u202fcamels in the wild, with most of them located in remote regions in Mongoliia and China. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">The zoo says that the first month in a new calf\u2019s life is \u201calways critical\u201d and the new addition \u201cmay not always be viewable to guests\u201d at first. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">\u201cToronto Zoo staff will continue to monitor both the calf and Suria closely. They are currently living with female camel, Jozy, in the Bactrian Camel Habitat in the Toronto Zoo\u2019s Eurasia Wilds area,\u201d the news release notes. \u201cOnce the calf is a bit older, Wildlife Care staff will begin introductions with other members of the group, including her nearly 3-year-old sister, Carrie, along with Tilly and Jamarcus.
