{"id":640754,"date":"2026-05-01T12:37:15","date_gmt":"2026-05-01T12:37:15","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/640754\/"},"modified":"2026-05-01T12:37:15","modified_gmt":"2026-05-01T12:37:15","slug":"spring-economic-update-lacks-details-on-spending-targets-results-pbo-national","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/640754\/","title":{"rendered":"Spring economic update lacks details on spending targets, results: PBO &#8211; National"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Canada\u2019s new <a href=\"https:\/\/globalnews.ca\/tag\/parliamentary-budget-officer\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">parliamentary budget officer<\/a> criticized the government\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/globalnews.ca\/tag\/spring-economic-update\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">spring economic update<\/a> on Thursday for lacking details on spending targets and results.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/70c8fc80.png\" alt=\"\" style=\"position:absolute;width:1px;height:1px\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\"\/><\/p>\n<p>Appearing before the House of Commons government operations committee, <a href=\"https:\/\/globalnews.ca\/tag\/annette-ryan\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Annette Ryan<\/a> said the update provided some metrics on progress but few mentions of risks and specific objectives.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe update instead introduced a range of new and rather undefined priorities, strategies and general objectives that similarly would benefit from greater accountability, details on governance and other aspects of planning that would inform Parliament as to what results the government is targeting for that spending,\u201d Ryan said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Canada Strong Fund is a leading example from that list.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Finance Minister Fran\u00e7ois-Philippe Champagne on Tuesday tabled a mid-year fiscal update that includes $54.5 billion in new costs and spending since Budget 2025.<\/p>\n<p>Story continues below advertisement<\/p>\n<p>Prime Minister Mark Carney unveiled plans Monday to launch the Canada Strong Fund, Canada\u2019s first sovereign wealth fund.
