Calgary city councillor Dan McLean says he plans to leave city hall for a seat in the Alberta Legislature.\u00a0<\/p>\n
McLean sharing in a statement Friday morning that he intends to seek the UCP nomination for Calgary-Shaw.\u00a0<\/p>\n
Current MLA Rebecca Schulz announced last year her plans to step down and leave this month.<\/p>\n
McLean said in his statement that he has been speaking to residents of Calgary-Shaw about their concerns and input, with him being encouraged to step forward.\u00a0<\/p>\n
\u201cResidents want a continuation of the strong, principled leadership Rebecca has demonstrated, and I would be honoured to carry that work forward,\u201d reads the statement.<\/p>\n
There has been some pushback about the prospect of McLean leaving city hall, with the organization Progressive Group for Independent Business calling on him to fulfill his full term.\u00a0<\/p>\n
They previously have raised the concern of the cost of a by-election to taxpayers and say voters wouldn\u2019t have voted for him again if they knew he planned on seeking higher office.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n
