{"id":642509,"date":"2026-05-02T06:54:13","date_gmt":"2026-05-02T06:54:13","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/642509\/"},"modified":"2026-05-02T06:54:13","modified_gmt":"2026-05-02T06:54:13","slug":"keystone-xl-not-the-only-option-says-canadas-energy-minister","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/642509\/","title":{"rendered":"Keystone XL not the only option, says Canada\u2019s energy minister"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Canada\u2019s minister for energy and resource development, Tim Hodgson, was in Calgary on Friday speaking to members of the Canadian Association of Energy Contractors about his government\u2019s commitment to the future of Canadian energy.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/70c8fc80.png\" alt=\"\" style=\"position:absolute;width:1px;height:1px\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\"\/><\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis government and Canadians now understand that energy is the engine of Canada\u2019s economy,\u201d said Hodgson.<\/p>\n<p>At a sold-out luncheon, the minister cited an abundance of natural resources \u2014 from oil and gas to critical minerals and potash \u2014 as why Canada can continue to be where the world gets its energy.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe have some incredible cards,\u201d Hodgson noted. \u201cWe need to play those cards well. We need to make sure we play them in a coordinated way so Canada gets the best outcome.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>On Thursday, U.S. President Donald Trump approved the Canada-Wyoming oil pipeline. More commonly known as Keystone XL, it has renewed the thought of more Canadian bitumen moving to the Gulf Coast.<\/p>\n<p>Story continues below advertisement<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOn a market basis alone? Yes, it makes sense,\u201d explained\u00a0 Robert Johnston, director of energy and natural resources policy at the University of Calgary School of Public Policy.<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t\t<img decoding=\"async\" width=\"170\" height=\"225\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/1767930311_275_national.jpg\" alt=\"Get breaking Canada news delivered to your inbox as it happens so you won't miss a trending story.\"\/><\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t\tGet breaking National news<\/p>\n<p>Get breaking Canada news delivered to your inbox as it happens so you won&#8217;t miss a trending story.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe U.S. is a huge refining market, not only for their own market, but also those big refineries export gasoline, diesel, and jet fuel to the global market, which right now is quite important.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>But even with the potential Keystone XL holds, Calgary Chamber of Commerce president and CEO Deborah Yedlin says nothing is certain.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat we have to be mindful of is that this is going to be one of a few options that producers will be continuing to focus on,\u201d Yedlin said. \u201cBecause we\u2019ve been twice bitten on this route.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\n\t\t\tMore on Economy<br \/>\n\t\t\tMore videos\n\t\t<\/p>\n<p>While the recently-signed memorandum of understanding between the federal and provincial governments has been helpful, Yedlin stressed more could be done to reassure producers.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt also hinges on regulatory certainty from a production standpoint,\u201d added Yedlin. \u201cWe still don\u2019t have that. What we really need is the regulatory certainty for companies to increase production.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Recently-announced investments into the trades, as well as major project approval process, are some of the ways the federal government is aiming to provide support. There\u2019s also the push to build a pipeline to the West Coast, which Hogson says should make finding a deal with the U.S. less lopsided in their favour.<\/p>\n<p>Story continues below advertisement<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf we like the deal we have with the Americans, awesome.
