Late-night hosts reacted to yet another call by Donald Trump<\/a> for Jimmy Kimmel<\/a> to be fired, more US floundering in Iran<\/a> and the supreme court effectively dismantling<\/a> the Voting Rights Act.<\/p>\n

Jimmy Kimmel<\/p>\n

Jimmy Kimmel woke up on Thursday morning to, somehow, yet another call from the president for his show to be cancelled<\/a>. As Donald Trump posted on Truth Social: \u201cWhen is ABC Fake News Network firing seriously unfunny Jimmy Kimmel, who incompetently presides over one of the Lowest Rated shows on Television? People are angry. It better be soon!!! President DJT\u201d<\/p>\n<\/p>\n

\u201cOr what?\u201d Kimmel laughed on Thursday evening. \u201cIf incompetently presiding over not just one of but the lowest rating in history is the reason I should be fired, we should both be out of a job. Because you\u2019re not doing too good, either.<\/p>\n

\u201cIsn\u2019t there a war dragging on?\u201d he continued. \u201cImagine if FDR had taken to the airwaves during the Battle of the Bulge to complain about a little orphan Annie comic strip that he didn\u2019t like.<\/p>\n

\u201cTrump has three wars going on right now \u2013 Iranians, Ukrainians and comedians.\u201d<\/p>\n

Kimmel also commended the \u201csmall handful of Republicans who have spoken out to defend our first amendment rights,\u201d including Senators Ted Cruz and Rand Paul. \u201cEvery one of these guys I\u2019ve made fun of repeatedly and viciously on this show, and you know what not one of them has done? Pressured ABC to fire me for it.\u201d<\/p>\n

Kimmel then played numerous clips of Trump on the campaign trail, decrying \u201ccancel culture\u201d and defending the US freedom of speech. \u201cI hate to say this and I hope it doesn\u2019t get me in trouble, I\u2019m starting to think Donald Trump might be a hypocrite,\u201d he quipped.<\/p>\n

And on a more serious note: \u201cAll of this is meant to distract from the prices he didn\u2019t lower on day one, or the Trump-Epstein files that his attorney general refuses to release, and to distract us from the illegal war he started and can\u2019t figure out how to get out of.\u201d<\/p>\n

Seth Meyers<\/p>\n

On Late Night, Seth Meyers<\/a> reacted to a different Trump post on Truth Social: an AI-generated image of him with a machine gun in Iran, with the caption \u201cNo More Mr Nice Guy\u201d.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m sorry, is this supposed to make you look cool?\u201d Meyers mocked. \u201cI\u2019m sorry man, but you\u2019re not John Wick.<\/p>\n

\u201cBut the craziest part of this meme is when Trump posted it,\u201d at 4.05am eastern time. \u201cThat is the craziest time to post anything, let alone a meme of yourself as some sort of super soldier blowing up an entire country.\u201d<\/p>\n

But \u201cif it worries you that this is the man in charge of our military at the time of war, let me put you at ease,\u201d Meyers said with facetious calm. \u201cThere are plenty of adults in the room \u2013 experienced military leaders, tacticians, who have studied the history of armed conflict, and they know how to get us out of this.\u201d<\/p>\n

That would be Kid Rock, who joined the defense secretary, Pete Hegseth, for a ride-along in army helicopters this week. \u201cWe\u2019re so fucked,\u201d Meyers noted. \u201cWhy is Kid Rock going for a joyride in an army helicopter and addressing members of the military?!\u201d<\/p>\n

Nevertheless, Trump continues to claim that the US has \u201ca very good relationship with Iran right now, as hard as it is to believe\u201d. Meyers, in fact, did not believe. \u201cYou just threatened Iran with a meme of yourself starring in the Bourne Stupidity. That\u2019s not what makes a good relationship!\u201d he fumed. \u201cHere\u2019s what makes a good relationship: consistency. You are all over the place. You\u2019re like a husband walking in at the end of the day saying \u2018hey honey, it\u2019s good to be home. But it\u2019s better to be at work because you\u2019re not there and I can\u2019t stand your guts. But I love your face, and I love it most when you\u2019re crying, because I\u2019m happy when you\u2019re sad.\u2019<\/p>\n

\u201cTrump keeps waffling between dealmaker and madman because he doesn\u2019t know which one will work and he\u2019s just grasping at straws,\u201d he added. \u201cHe started a war he reportedly thought would be quick and now he can\u2019t figure out how to end it.\u201d<\/p>\n

And on the Daily Show, Josh Johnson delved into the supreme court ruling that Louisiana will have to redraw its congressional map, in a landmark decision that effectively guts<\/a> a major remaining section of the Voting Rights Act.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe supreme court saw that Louisiana had two whole Black congressmen, and they were like \u2018whoa, what is this, showtime at the Apollo? Let\u2019s dial this back,\u2019\u201d Johnson joked. \u201cNow, thanks to the supreme court, Black districts are going to get erased all across the South, which is horrible for civil rights.<\/p>\n

\u201cAnd obviously, the supreme court didn\u2019t come right out and say that states can be racist,\u201d he continued. \u201cJustice Palpatine isn\u2019t that dumb, all right? He played it much smoother.\u201d<\/p>\n

As the conservative justice Samuel Alito wrote: \u201cRace can only be taken into account when there is evidence \u2026 the state intentionally drew its districts to afford minority voters less opportunity because of their race.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThat\u2019s crazy,\u201d said Johnson. \u201cJust to be clear: for Alito, the map is not racist, unless the guy drawing it finishes it and goes, \u2018Man, I\u2019m racist!\u2019<\/p>\n

\u201cNow, if you\u2019re watching this whole thing unfold and you\u2019re thinking to yourself, \u2018this seems pretty racist,\u2019 Republicans have great news for you.\u201d Johnson then played several clips of conservatives claiming that race no longer needed to be a factor in redistricting because, to quote one white, male, rightwing commentator: \u201cIt\u2019s the end of pretending that this is a racist country.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cRacism is over!\u201d Johnson cheered facetiously. \u201cI just thought when racism was over, we\u2019d hear about it from like a civil rights leader, or something. Not a guy who looks like the racist version of the dad from Modern Family.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat these people don\u2019t get is that to the extent that there\u2019s less discrimination now, it\u2019s partly because we have the VRA,\u201d he concluded. \u201cSo this is like my uncle who threw away his medication because he said his heart wasn\u2019t bothering him any more.
