Calgary police say a man charged with first-degree murder in the deaths of two children \u2014 a five-year-old boy and a three-year-old girl \u2014 is their father.<\/p>\n

The children were found Thursday in an SUV along a busy thoroughfare in the city\u2019s northwest.<\/p>\n

Police said they had received a phone call around 10 a.m. that led them to the Jeep, which was stopped, and the man was arrested outside the vehicle.<\/p>\n

Court records say the children were killed a day earlier.<\/p>\n

The father made his first court appearance Friday, and information identifying the victims can\u2019t be released under a publication ban.<\/p>\n

Police haven\u2019t said how the children died but autopsies were scheduled for later Friday.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis is a devastating and unimaginable loss. Our hearts are with the victims\u2019 loved ones, and with the officers and first responders who both attended the scene and who are seeing through the investigation,\u201d Staff Sgt. Mark Rahn said in a statement.<\/p>\n

\u201cThese are extraordinarily difficult investigations, both professionally and personally, and we are committed to getting justice for these victims.\u201d<\/p>\n
