At the time, the draft had six rounds, compared to eight today.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Western began with five hopefuls in the draft process, three of which competed at the <a href=\"https:\/\/westerngazette.ca\/sports\/mustangs-measure-up-at-cfl-combine-despite-no-invitations-extended\/article_8cbf99e9-5547-45b1-805f-6744c13ccce4.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">CFL Invitational Combine<\/a> in Waterloo in early March. Their goal was to receive an invite to the National CFL Combine in Edmonton at the end of the month \u2014 the final opportunity for athletes to showcase their talents before the <a href=\"https:\/\/westerngazette.ca\/sports\/mustangs-measure-up-at-cfl-combine-despite-no-invitations-extended\/article_8cbf99e9-5547-45b1-805f-6744c13ccce4.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" fifth-year backup quarterback <a href=\"https:\/\/westerngazette.ca\/sports\/j-r-me-rancourt-mustangs-swiss-army-knife-and-potential-2026-qb1\/article_7ec75ef1-aa2b-42b4-a0c2-1ea82b25957f.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">J\u00e9r\u00f4me Rancourt<\/a> \u2014 who had the second most rushing touchdowns in the OUA this season \u2014 already having secured their spots among the 100 athletes at the CFL Combine.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Despite their sparkling resumes and <a href=\"https:\/\/westerngazette.ca\/sports\/two-mustangs-impress-at-2026-cfl-national-combine\/article_df6d1e04-e24b-4f30-88ee-6a11b4e3c06f.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">strong scores<\/a> \u2014 including O\u2019Neil leading the combine bench press with 30 reps and running the third-fastest three-cone drill of all offensive linemen \u2014 neither saw their names called.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">\u201cThe Western Mustangs football program has a rich history of excellence, with 35 Yates Cup championships since its inception, and a strong legacy of developing top-tier players who play in the CFL,\u201d said Western football head coach Michael Faulds in a statement to the Gazette.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Just two days after the draft, O\u2019Neil was signed as a free agent to the Toronto Argonauts.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">The draft was dominated by American universities at the start, with 19 of the first 29 picks coming from the NCAA loop, and eight of nine first-round selections coming from U.S. schools.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Despite this, U Sports ended the night representing over 60 per cent of the players taken in the draft.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">With the draft in the rearview, Western will look to bounce back from a frustrating season when they kick things off against the York University Lions at home on September
