{"id":644881,"date":"2026-05-03T10:24:13","date_gmt":"2026-05-03T10:24:13","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/644881\/"},"modified":"2026-05-03T10:24:13","modified_gmt":"2026-05-03T10:24:13","slug":"in-pictures-metrocentre-turns-40","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/644881\/","title":{"rendered":"In pictures: Metrocentre turns 40"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Once Europe&#8217;s largest shopping centre, the Metrocentre turns 40 this week.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Opening in 1986, the Gateshead mall still welcomes 16 million visitors a year to its 270 stores, restaurants and leisure attractions.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">It was described as a &#8220;retail revolution&#8221; by developer Sir John Hall when it opened and it even had its own indoor theme park, Metroland.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Metroland gave way to the Yellow Mall in 2008, the busy restaurant quarter which now has the cinema.<\/p>\n<p><img alt=\"A black and white photo of an older couple going up on an escalator.
