The Minnesota Frost wasted no time setting the tone, stealing home-ice advantage from the Montreal Victoire with a 5\u20134 overtime win in Game 1 on Saturday.<\/p>\n
Jincy Roese scored the winner 4:30 into overtime, firing a point shot that deflected off of goaltender Ann-Ren\u00e9e Desbiens and trickled across the goal line.\u00a0<\/p>\n
Montreal\u2019s Laura Stacey made history with the PWHL\u2019s first playoff hat trick in a fast-paced, back-and-forth game that saw five goals scored in under eight minutes of game time between the second and third periods.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt\u2019s a five-game series for a reason,\u201d said Stacey. \u201cThey\u2019re a good team, we\u2019re a good team. At the end of the day, we just need to find a way to win.\u201d<\/p>\n
Minnesota jumped out to a 2\u20130 first-period lead thanks to goals from Katy Knoll and captain Kendall Coyne Schofield. Montreal responded with goals from Shiann Darkangelo and Stacey to even things up.<\/p>\n
The game was already very physical, but it escalated to a whole new level late in the second when Britta Curl-Salemme received a major penalty and game misconduct for a hit to the head of Kaitlin Willoughby. Stacey capitalized on the power play early in the third, part of a three-goal burst that tied the game at four by the end of regulation.<\/p>\n
Maddie Rooney made 21 saves for Minnesota, while Desbiens stopped 24 in the loss.<\/p>\n
After finishing first in the regular season, Montreal chose Minnesota as its semifinal opponent. When coach Cheverie was asked if she had any regrets in their decision, she simply replied, \u201cno.\u201d<\/p>\n
With the win, the Frost take a 1\u20130 series lead. The Victoire will look to respond in Game 2 Tuesday night at Place Bell at 7 p.m.<\/p>\n
