\nSault Area Hospital is proud to recognize Mental Health Week, taking place May 4 to 10, 2026, by hosting community-focused events and unveiling a new interactive mural installation designed to inspire connection, reflection, and hope.<\/p>\n
Throughout the week, members of the community are invited to participate in activities that promote awareness, reduce stigma, and highlight local mental health and addictions supports.<\/p>\n
Information table at Sault Area Hospital<\/p>\n
Representatives from Canadian Mental Health Association Algoma, Sault Area Hospital mental health and addictions staff members, and Sault Area Hospital Patient and Family Advisors will host an information table in the Sault Area Hospital lobby. Community members are encouraged to stop by to learn more about programs and services available locally, ask questions, and connect with care providers and advocates.<\/p>\n

Mental health symposium:<\/p>\n
On Thursday, May 7, 2026, Sault Area Hospital, in partnership with Sault Community Health Centre, Canadian Mental Health Association Algoma, Algoma Ontario Health Team, and Algoma Family Services, has invited 200 health-care professionals and community partners to attend the upcoming Trauma & Addictions Symposium. Guided by this year\u2019s theme, Stronger Together, the symposium highlights the importance of collaboration, shared learning, and collective action in addressing trauma and addictions within our communities.<\/p>\n
This engaging full-day event will bring together experts, front-line workers, and individuals with lived experience to explore practical strategies, emerging trends, and meaningful approaches to trauma-informed and addictions care.<\/p>\n
Participants will gain valuable insights through sessions such as From Insight to Action: Implementing Trauma-Informed Care, and Beyond Self-Care: Building a Robust Approach to Navigating High-Stress, Trauma-Exposed Work, led by Diana Tikasz, MSW, RSW. Attendees will also take part in Stay or Go Training with Nimkii-Naabkawagan Family Crisis Shelter, and learn about Emerging Trends in Addictions Medicine with Dr. Kaustubh Bal, MD, and Erin McCaig, RN.<\/p>\n
The day will also feature powerful stories of lived experience, a guided mindfulness breathwork session led by Aline Wellness, and opportunities to connect and network with peers \u2014 reinforcing the value of coming together to support better outcomes for those affected by trauma and substance use.<\/p>\n
Cocoon to Community \u2014 mural unveiling<\/p>\n
Sault Area Hospital is proud to formally unveil Cocoon to Community, a new interactive mural installation centred on mental health, growth, and connection.<\/p>\n
This meaningful installation was inspired by members of the Mental Health and Addictions Patient and Family Advisors Committee (PFAC), whose vision helped bring the concept to life. Cocoon to Community reflects a journey of growth and transformation \u2014 moving from a place of introspection, protection, and personal development into one of connection, participation, and shared experience. It speaks to the process of emerging from isolation or healing and stepping forward into meaningful engagement with others.<\/p>\n
The mural symbolizes:<\/p>\n
\n\tPersonal growth that leads to connection and belonging
\n\tHealing and readiness to re-engage
\n\tA shift from individual focus to collective participation
\n\tThe beauty of shared human experience
<\/p>\n
At the heart of this installation are four core themes:<\/p>\n
\n\tCourage \u2014 Showing up with strength in the face of fear or uncertainty and taking action even when the outcome is unknown.
\n\tResilience \u2014 The ability to recover and adapt through challenge, change, or adversity, growing through difficulty with strength and grace.
\n\tAuthenticity \u2014 Living and speaking from your true self, grounded in self-awareness, honesty, and integrity.
\n\tAcceptance \u2014 Meeting yourself and others with openness and without judgment, creating space for compassion and understanding.
<\/p>\n
Designed to evolve, the mural is intentionally interactive and ever-changing. Button images featured in the installation can be interchanged, allowing the piece to grow alongside the community\u2019s voices and experiences.<\/p>\n
The installation also provides a dedicated space for community contributions. Visitors are invited to submit artwork, poems, or words of encouragement. Selected submissions will be displayed on the wall for a period of time, creating an opportunity for shared expression and connection.<\/p>\n
To participate, submissions should be created on letter-sized paper and placed in the drop box located next to the mural. All submissions must be free of offensive or inappropriate material.<\/p>\n
The mural is located at the main Sault Area Hospital site, level one, C-wing \u2014 mental health and addictions.<\/p>\n
This project was made possible through the collaboration of Patient and Family Advisors, mental health and addictions leadership, and the hospital\u2019s communications team, and was generously funded by the Sault Area Hospital Foundation.<\/p>\n
