The City of Winnipeg says its annual residential water meter reading program is set to begin this week.<\/p>\n
According to a City of Winnipeg press release, meter readers will begin visiting homes on May 4, with the program running through August 28. Visits will take place on weekdays between 9 a.m. and 8:30 p.m.<\/p>\n
City officials say the program helps ensure households provide at least one accurate meter reading each year, which is required under the Water By-law.<\/p>\n
\u201cAlmost 11,000 customers have gone a year or longer without providing us with a meter reading,\u201d said Councillor Ross Eadie, chairman of the Standing Policy Committee on Water, Waste and the Environment.<\/p>\n
\u201cOur annual meter reading program is an easy way for our customers to ensure they get at least one reading in every year to avoid violating the Water By-law and avoid potential huge bills when an actual reading is provided.\u201d<\/p>\n

The City says meter readers will be identifiable by a uniform with the City of Winnipeg logo, a hand-held device, and photo identification. Residents are reminded to ask for identification before allowing anyone into their home. Meter readers will only knock on front and side doors.<\/p>\n
Homeowners are encouraged to make sure their water meter is accessible and free of obstructions ahead of a visit. Residents are also asked to secure any dogs, as meter readers will not enter a home if a dog is loose.<\/p>\n
If no one is home at the time of the visit, a meter reading card will be left with instructions on how to submit a reading by phone or online.<\/p>\n
The City says submitting regular meter readings, including quarterly updates, can help identify leaks and ensure residents are billed accurately for their water use.<\/p>\n
