{"id":647656,"date":"2026-05-04T18:06:14","date_gmt":"2026-05-04T18:06:14","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/647656\/"},"modified":"2026-05-04T18:06:14","modified_gmt":"2026-05-04T18:06:14","slug":"federal-government-rolling-out-1-5-billion-in-tariff-relief","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/647656\/","title":{"rendered":"Federal government rolling out $1.5 billion in tariff relief"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The federal government is announcing $1.5 billion in tariff relief in response to the United States widening its tariff criteria last month.<\/p>\n<p>The announcement includes the creation of a new $1 billion program under the Business Development Bank of Canada to bolster the manufacturing sector, and a $500 million top-up to the regional tariff response fund.<\/p>\n<p>The new development bank programming is meant to shore up factories hit by U.S. tariffs affecting exports of products containing steel, aluminum and cooper.<\/p>\n<p>It will make available three-year, low-interest loans of up to $50 million to tariff-hit businesses.<\/p>\n<p>Industry Minister M\u00e9lanie Joly announced the federal funding today at a manufacturing facility southeast of Ottawa.<\/p>\n<p>Joly says while the government must act to provide businesses with liquidity in the short term, it\u2019s also pursuing a broader medium-term strategy to help exporters adapt and move into new markets.<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t\t<img width=\"1024\" height=\"578\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/6d7dd00c24b8c585bf3fd961ca7c66fd2ea3f84c6819d63f058d67ac5c365f3e-e1777903440314-1024x578.jpg\" class=\"attachment-large size-large wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" ratio=\"16x9\" decoding=\"async\" fetchpriority=\"high\"  \/>\t\t\t\t\t<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\tMinister of Industry M\u00e9lanie Joly rises during question period in the House of Commons on Parliament Hill in Ottawa on Wednesday, April 29, 2026.
