{"id":648117,"date":"2026-05-04T22:46:09","date_gmt":"2026-05-04T22:46:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/648117\/"},"modified":"2026-05-04T22:46:09","modified_gmt":"2026-05-04T22:46:09","slug":"anish-kapoor-says-uss-politics-of-hate-should-exclude-it-from-venice-biennale-venice-biennale","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/648117\/","title":{"rendered":"Anish Kapoor says US\u2019s \u2018politics of hate\u2019 should exclude it from Venice Biennale | Venice Biennale"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Anish Kapoor has said that the US should be excluded from the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/artanddesign\/venice-biennale\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" data-component=\"auto-linked-tag\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Venice Biennale<\/a> because of the country\u2019s \u201cabhorrent politics of hate\u201d and its \u201cincessant warmongering\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">The artist, who represented Britain <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/artanddesign\/2022\/apr\/21\/anish-kapoor-venice-exhibitions-vantablack\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">at the 1990 edition<\/a>, said he commended the biennale jury\u2019s decision to resign in protest <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/artanddesign\/2026\/apr\/30\/venice-biennale-jury-quits-amid-row-russia\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">at the inclusion of Israel and Russia<\/a> just a few days before the event, which is billed as the \u201cOlympics of art\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">However, Kapoor said the five-member international jury should have included the US in their reasoning for pulling out of judging the prizes, which will now be delayed until November.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">He called the decision to resign \u201ccourageous\u201d, but added: \u201cI would hope that they might have also excluded the United States for its abhorrent politics of hate and its incessant warmongering.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>One of the works at the Anish Kapoor exhibition in Venice. Photograph: David Levene\/The Guardian<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">The US entry to the biennale, Alma Allen \u2013 an artist few people in the art world were aware of before his selection \u2013 has faced <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vanityfair.com\/style\/story\/who-is-alma-allen-the-artist-who-will-represent-the-us-at-the-venice-biennale?srsltid=AfmBOopXDGIhgIoc4lDEjtaiwcUqIeMC6a5N5ZmV2qXo06J5ecvPrGNi\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">intense scrutiny<\/a> because of perceived interference from the Trump administration in his selection.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">The announcement of the US artist was delayed significantly by the longest government shutdown in the country\u2019s history, while several other artists reportedly <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ft.com\/content\/481c1e2f-fb99-47d5-bf5e-dffa301150bc\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">turned down the opportunity<\/a>. Entrants were told that the work must \u201creflect and promote American values\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">The curator of the US pavilion, Jeffrey Uslip, defended Allen\u2019s entry, which is named Call Me the Breeze and features about 30 sculptures or biomorphic forms, all called Not Yet Titled.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cA lot of people expect abstract work or political work to look a certain way,\u201d he said. \u201cI\u2019d like the same people to tell me that [Isamu] Noguchi\u2019s biomorphic <a href=\"https:\/\/www.noguchi.org\/museum\/exhibitions\/view\/no-monument-in-the-wake-of-the-japanese-american-incarceration\/\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">abstract sculpture<\/a> had nothing to do with the second world war.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cWhen they see [Allen\u2019s] Guatemalan green quartzite in the courtyard, it is human-sized, it is a bag form. It requires people to look and not just say: \u2018Oh, this is abstract, so it can\u2019t be political.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Allen, who was homeless for a time and began making sculptures while living in New York City where he worked in construction, said his art represented \u201cthe experiences that I have had in my life\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cThis is how my life has gone,\u201d he said previously. \u201cThere are moments of luck and moments of difficulty. Photograph: David Levene\/The Guardian<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">The US pavilion is far from the only flashpoint at the 61st biennale, where politics are also threatening to overshadow proceedings around the Israeli and Russian pavilions.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">More than 200 participants in the event signed a letter, organised by the Art Not Genocide Alliance (Anga), demanding the cancellation of the Israeli pavilion. \u201cWe, the undersigned, stand together as artists, curators and art workers in a collective refusal to allow you to platform the Israeli state as it commits genocide,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theartnewspaper.com\/2026\/03\/17\/hundreds-of-venice-biennale-participants-sign-letter-demanding-cancellation-of-israeli-pavilion\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">the letter said<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">A strike is organised by Anga for Friday that could bring the event, which is hosting its preview this week, to a standstill. Israel\u2019s foreign ministry has condemned Anga, calling its actions \u201canti-Israeli political indoctrination\u201d and \u201cdirect discrimination\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">On Monday, the Italian ministry of culture confirmed that the Russian pavilion will not be open to the public, though the art installation will be viewable through the windows.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">After Russia\u2019s 2022 invasion of Ukraine, the biennale condemned it and banned anyone linked to the Kremlin. It never formally barred <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/russia\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Russia<\/a> from participating, but the country was absent from the 2022 and 2024 editions.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">The Italian government has clashed with organisers over the reintroduction of Russia, claiming the decision had been made \u201centirely independently by the Biennale Foundation, despite the Italian government\u2019s opposition\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>One of Anish Kapoor\u2019s works at the Palazzo Manfrin exhibition. Photograph: David Levene\/The Guardian<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Last week, the European Commission wrote to the Biennale Foundation saying it <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/artanddesign\/2026\/mar\/12\/venice-biennale-risks-losing-eu-funding-over-planned-russia-involvement\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">planned to terminate or suspend its \u20ac2m (\u00a31.73m) grant<\/a> for the exhibition because of Russia\u2019s involvement.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Kapoor, who has a show in Venice, previously threatened legal action against the Trump administration after border patrol agents posed for a photograph in front of his Cloud Gate sculpture in Chicago.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">He said the scene represented \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/artanddesign\/2025\/nov\/12\/anish-kapoor-may-sue-border-agents-pose-by-sculpture\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">fascist America<\/a>\u201d, while the artist has previously taken legal action against the National Rifle Association after they used an image of Cloud Gate.
