May 5 (Reuters) – Apple will allow users to select from third-party artificial intelligence models for tasks such as \u200cgenerating and editing text and images, across its \u200ciOS 27 features, Bloomberg News reported on Tuesday.<\/p>\n
The change is slated for iOS \u200b27, iPadOS 27 and macOS 27 this fall, the report said, citing people with knowledge of the matter. Within iOS 27, Apple refers to this capability as “Extensions” that lets users to \u200cchoose which AI \u2060services they want to power Apple Intelligence features through the Settings app.<\/p>\n
The update will allow users \u2060to select from AI model providers that opt in by adding compatibility through their App Store applications. To date, Apple has \u200bbeen internally \u200btesting integrations with at least \u200bAlphabet’s Google and Anthropic, \u200cthe report said.<\/p>\n
Apple did not immediately respond to a Reuters request for comment.<\/p>\n
The development comes as Apple looks to close the gap with rivals Alphabet and Microsoft, which have moved faster to roll out AI features.<\/p>\n
Google’s Gemini is expected to \u200cpower Apple’s revamped Siri coming this \u200byear.<\/p>\n
Apple is scheduled to hold its \u200bannual software developer conference \u200bin June, where it is expected to reveal \u200cmore details about its AI \u200bplans.<\/p>\n
Last week, the \u200btech giant said it expects sales growth of 14% to 17% in the third quarter, above Wall Street \u200bestimates of 9.5% \u200cgrowth, touting blowout demand for its flagship iPhone 17 \u200band the MacBook Neo.<\/p>\n
