Brampton\u2019s now-closed, nearly $78-million automated speed camera processing centre could soon be used to issue red-light tickets to drivers across the city and in Mississauga.<\/p>\n
Purchase of the $77.9 million building was approved in 2023 under the city\u2019s massive expansion of ASE cameras<\/a>, which finished just weeks before an Ontario-wide ban late last year.<\/p>\n And while the city has been exploring new uses for its 185 ASE cameras \u2013 like assisting with police investigations and adding vehicle noise monitoring technology \u2013 the processing centre could be used to take over red-light camera processing starting next year.<\/p>\n There are currently 21 red light cameras in Mississauga, 15 in Brampton and one in Caledon. Peel Region has agreements with the City of Toronto and a company called Jenoptik for supply and installation of red light cameras, and ticket processing.<\/p>\n In 2024, $140,000 was paid to Toronto for processing red-light camera offences across Peel Region, and $160,000 in 2025.<\/p>\n But the City of Brampton says it \u201cexpects to be well positioned\u201d to deliver \u201ca comprehensive RLC solution, including both camera infrastructure and processing services\u201d by the start of 2027, according to a regional report.<\/p>\n And Brampton\u2019s processing rates \u201cwould be no higher\u201d than those currently period out by the region under the existing agreement with the City of Toronto.<\/p>\n
