{"id":650621,"date":"2026-05-06T02:35:22","date_gmt":"2026-05-06T02:35:22","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/650621\/"},"modified":"2026-05-06T02:35:22","modified_gmt":"2026-05-06T02:35:22","slug":"honda-halts-15b-ev-plant-in-canada-report","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/650621\/","title":{"rendered":"Honda halts $15B EV plant in Canada: report"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"c-paragraph\">Honda Motors will suspend plans to build an electric vehicle plant in Canada after slow U.S. demand pushed the Japanese automaker \u201cto put hybrids at the centre of its North American strategy,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/asia.nikkei.com\/business\/automobiles\/honda-to-shelve-11bn-canada-ev-plant-as-demand-sputters\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Nikkei Asia reported<\/a> on Tuesday. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">CTV News reached out to Industry Minister Melanie Joly for comment on the report, to which her office said the global automotive sector is experiencing \u201csignificant change.\u201d <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">\u201cAmerican tariffs and changes to U.S. domestic policies are creating real pressures for automakers, prompting some to delay or scale back investments in electric vehicle and battery projects,\u201d the office of the minister said in a response. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">The plant, which Honda had expected to invest a total of $15 billion into, was slated to begin operating as early as 2028. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">\u201cCanada will continue to support and protect existing automotive facilities by mitigating tariff pressures and sustaining the production of fuel-efficient vehicles, while positioning the sector for long-term growth, resilience and global competitiveness,\u201d Joly\u2019s office added in its response. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">In a statement to CTV News, Honda Canada said the company has \u201cnothing to report at this time.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">In May 2025, Honda announced it would <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ctvnews.ca\/business\/autos\/article\/honda-canada-postpones-15-billion-ev-investment-project-in-ontario\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">delay the project for two years<\/a>, with Honda chief executive Toshihiro Mibe saying the company would examine where the EV market is before deciding whether to move forward with the project. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">\u201cWhat happens after two years and the starting time of the project, we have to observe what is happening and ultimately make the decision,\u201d he said, based on translated remarks.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Honda Motors will suspend plans to build an electric vehicle plant in Canada after slow U.S. demand pushed&hellip;\n","protected":false},"author":2,"featured_media":650622,"comment_status":"","ping_status":"","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[4],"tags":[712,49,48,44],"class_list":["post-650621","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-canada","tag-apple-news","tag-ca","tag-canada","tag-news"],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/650621","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/2"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=650621"}],"version-history":[{"count":0,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/650621\/revisions"}],"wp:featuredmedia":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media\/650622"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=650621"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=650621"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=650621"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
