Cam Smith has laughed off retirement rumours, and said he has been given \u201cevery assurance\u201d LIV Golf<\/a> will continue beyond this year.<\/p>\n

The future of LIV \u2013 and Smith\u2019s all-Australian Ripper GC team \u2013 is in jeopardy after Saudi Arabia withdrew funding of the breakaway league.<\/p>\n

\u201cSince joining LIV, I have learnt to deal with speculation and reports, so it hasn\u2019t really changed,\u201d Smith said.<\/p>\n

Asked what assurances he had been given about LIV\u2019s future after this year, Smith replied: \u201cEvery assurance. Absolutely. That\u2019s the goal, 100%.’\u2019<\/p>\n

Pressed on who had offered assurance, Smith said: \u201cI promise you will hear it first from someone else, rather than me.\u201d<\/p>\n

He was reluctant to expand on LIV\u2019s future during a teleconference with Australian media from Virginia in the US, where LIV\u2019s next tournament starts on Thursday.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s just so fresh, so there\u2019s nothing really to say,\u201d Smith said. \u201cI know the team are working hard behind the scenes and they\u2019re doing everything they can for us.<\/p>\n

\u201cSo I am excited, I know [LIV Golf chief executive] Scott O\u2019Neil is really excited for the progress and challenge in the coming months.\u201d<\/p>\n

Asked about rumours he could retire, Smith laughed before replying: \u201cI\u2019m 32, so I have got a while yet. Gee, I haven\u2019t been asked that question before. That\u2019s good.\u201d<\/p>\n

Smith has won more than $US50m in LIV prize money after signing for a fee understood to be about $US100m.<\/p>\n

The Queenslander, a prized early recruit, was appointed captain of the all-Australian Ripper GC that also features Marc Leishman, Lucas Herbert and Elvis Smylie.<\/p>\n

The captaincy arrangement came with a 25% equity stake in the team, with the league holding the remainder.<\/p>\n

LIV has aimed for a $US300m valuation of the 13 teams as it seeks potential private investors.<\/p>\n

Ripper GC boss Nick Adams said this week team values could hit $US1bn \u2013 if sold at that price, Smith is in line for another bumper pay day of $US250m.<\/p>\n

But Smith acknowledged his on-course struggles ahead of next week\u2019s major, the US PGA Championship in Pennsylvania.<\/p>\n

Smith, the 2022 Open champ, last year was the sole golfer to miss the halfway cut in all four majors.<\/p>\n

He also failed to make the weekend action at last month\u2019s Masters.<\/p>\n

\u201cEarly in my career, I hung my hat on how I performed in the majors,\u201d Smith said. \u201cAnd it\u2019s just not good enough. I am making a few changes and trying to get back to where I was and better.<\/p>\n

\u201cI can promise you, the fire is in the belly, it\u2019s just a matter of time.
