{"id":650859,"date":"2026-05-06T05:06:08","date_gmt":"2026-05-06T05:06:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/650859\/"},"modified":"2026-05-06T05:06:08","modified_gmt":"2026-05-06T05:06:08","slug":"pennsylvania-sues-ai-firm-over-health-misinformation","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/650859\/","title":{"rendered":"Pennsylvania sues AI firm over health misinformation"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Pennsylvania has sued an artificial intelligence chatbot maker, saying its chatbots illegally hold themselves out <a id=\"HyhVx2G5rOR11g\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ynetnews.com\/health_science\/article\/h1b0arncbx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">as doctors<\/a> and are deceiving the system&#8217;s users into thinking they are getting medical advice from a licensed professional.The lawsuit, filed Friday, asks the statewide Commonwealth Court to order Character Technologies Inc., the company behind Character.AI, to stop its <a id=\"Ska4enMqSOR11g\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ynetnews.com\/business\/article\/sksiwzs1h\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">chatbots<\/a> \u201cfrom engaging in the unlawful practice of medicine and surgery.\u201dThe lawsuit said an investigator from the state agency that licenses professionals created an account on Character.AI, searched on the word <a id=\"Sk0VgnGcHd0bg\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ynetnews.com\/health_science\/article\/rkug5nhtwe\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">\u201cpsychiatry\u201d<\/a> and found a large number of characters, including one described as a \u201cdoctor of psychiatry.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>That character held itself out as able to assess the investigator \u201cas a doctor&#8221; who is licensed in Pennsylvania, the lawsuit said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPennsylvanians deserve to know who \u2014 or what \u2014 they are interacting with online, especially when it comes to their health,\u201d Gov. Josh Shapiro said in a statement. \u201cWe will not allow companies to deploy AI tools that mislead people into believing they are receiving advice from a licensed medical professional.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Character Technologies did not respond to an inquiry Monday.<\/p>\n<p>The company has faced several lawsuits over child safety. In January, Google and Character Technologies agreed to settle a lawsuit from a Florida mother who alleged a chatbot pushed her teenage son to kill himself.
