Papatsie’s sister, Sheepa, spoke at the ceremony, remembering her younger sister fondly as an outgoing young woman.

“She would make people laugh. She also made sure her loved ones are being taken care of,” Sheepa told CBC News. “That’s why I wonder how this happened to her when she was very tough, but very lovable. Like she showed her love to the people she loved.”

Mary Papatsie was 39 years old when she disappeared in Ottawa’s east end in April 2017, with the Ottawa Police Service’s (OPS) major crime unit taking over the case two and a half months later. By September 2017, police had deemed Papatsie’s disappearance suspicious.

After her remains were found and identified, Papatsie was buried in 2023 in Pangnirtung, Nunavut, the Baffin Island community where she was born and raised.

Shortly after Papatsie’s funeral, Rideau-Vanier Coun. Stéphanie Plante introduced the idea of renaming Ottawa’s Emond Park to Papatsie’s family.

“Anytime you go into this kind of commemoration, you want to make sure you have the family on board, and especially the children,” Plante said. “I want the children especially to see their mom with a sense of pride.”

Fabric of the community

Papatsie was the mother of 10 children, and the youngest of eight siblings. She’d previously worked in the North, assisting doctors and nurses, her sister July Papatsie told CBC in 2019. However, after being sexually assaulted two decades ago, Mary moved to Ottawa.

Mary is remembered fondly by members of the local community in Ottawa, who recalled memories of going for walks with her and stopping to talk whenever they saw her in the neighbourhood. Speaking at Tuesday’s ceremony, Sheepa said Mary would be honoured to know her name is now attached to a place where family and members of her community can gather.

“She will not be forgotten,” Sheepa said. “Mary Papatsie Park will still probably be here by the time I’m gone. And that way she will be remembered.”

Despite community support, the renaming process still faced a few hurdles, as Ottawa’s rules for naming city parks said park names could not be used for memorials. Plante pushed back against this policy, arguing that renaming spaces in honour of the lives of individuals such as Walter Baker and Terry Fox are rarely questioned.

Wrapping paper, ribbons and a red dress cover the newly unveiled ‘Mary Papatsie Park’ sign. The unveiling of the sign on Tuesday coincided with Red Dress Day, which draws attention and awareness to Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women, Girls, and Two-Spirit+ People (MMIWG2S+). (Liam Baker/CBC)

“I want people to have that same memory when they think of Mary Papatsie, not only how wonderful she was, and how loved she was in the community, but the way her passing needs to be something that both the city and the country need to address,” Plante told CBC.

In October, four years after Mary’s remains were identified, Ottawa city council approved a motion for the renaming.

A reminder to speak up

The unveiling of the new Mary Papatsie Park sign coincided with Red Dress Day, which draws attention and awareness to Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women, Girls, and Two-Spirit+ People (MMIWG2S+). Mary’s sister Sheepa says the choosing of that day to unveil the sign was significant.

“[Red Dress Day] reminds me of her every year since she went missing and since her body was found,” Sheepa said. “Every year it reminds me of her, but it’s also for us to speak up, for people to hear our voice.”

Speaking at the ceremony, Plante said she thinks there should be more MMIWG2S+ memorials, including a national commemoration.

While Sheepa lives several hours’ drive away in Oshawa, Ont., she says the park gives her a new reason to make the trek to Ottawa, where she doesn’t come very often.

“Everytime, when I come to Ottawa, I’ll try my best to come here,” she said. “I will try my best to come and see it as much as I can.”

Listen to this article Estimated 4 minutes The audio version of this article is generated by AI-based technology.…

[194295
49,48,20739
post-651098","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-ottawa","tag-ca","tag-canada","tag-ottawa
["GET
