Oilers reportedly tried to trade Darnell Nurse to Maple Leafs for Nic Roy at deadline<\/p>\n
It\u2019s no longer smoke that the Edmonton Oilers<\/a> seemingly have a desire to move on from Darnell Nurse.As the 2024 playoffs wound down, his name began to appear on trade target boards<\/a> as a potential option to be moved, and a year later, the Oilers asked Nurse to waive his no-trade clause \u2014 something he declined<\/a>.Ahead of the trade deadline this year, there was chatter that the Oilers<\/a> could look to move Nurse, something\u00a0The Fourth Period\u2019s\u00a0David Pagnotta confirmed after the deadline.<\/p>\n Pagnotta took that confirmation a step further Tuesday on Oilersnation Everyday, saying the Oilers and Toronto Maple Leafs had discussions around a deal that would\u2019ve moved Nurse out east for<\/p>\n \u201cWe touched on this after the trade deadline, I\u2019ve mentioned it a few times: Nurse\u2019s name was out there the week of the deadline. They offered him up to at least one team, that team said no, that team now has a new general manager. That team probably won\u2019t go in that direction, they didn\u2019t want to go in that direction before with the previous guy. I can\u2019t imagine new guy wanting to do that. One of the other pieces part of that deal that Edmonton was looking at, from what I was told, he\u2019s on Colorado right now.<\/p>\n \u201cEdmonton spoke to Toronto ahead of the deadline to try to make that happen, obviously it didn\u2019t, and it was really that close at the time, from what I was told. His name was circulating. They spoke to the Leafs, that didn\u2019t happen. We\u2019ll see where that kind of goes.\u201d<\/p>\n Any chatter between the Oilers and Leafs would\u2019ve likely been in late February, as Edmonton wound up trading for Jason Dickinson<\/a> to be their third-line centre \u2014 a move that worked out well. Roy ended up with the Colorado Avalanche, where he scored three goals and five points in 15 games in the regular season, and has added two goals and three points in five playoffs games heading into Tuesday\u2019s Game 2 matchup against the Minnesota Wild.<\/p>\n Pagnotta added that in any potential Nurse deal, it wouldn\u2019t be one where the team freed up all of his $9.25 million contract.<\/p>\n \u201cThey\u2019re not moving Nurse to free up $9.25 million. That\u2019s not happening\u2026 If you\u2019re moving him out, even if you\u2019re retaining a little bit, you\u2019re doing so with the hope of freeing up a few million to give yourself more flexibility.\u201d<\/p>\n Edmonton is a team to watch heading into the summer, and if they do look to move Nurse again, it would be nothing short of a franchise-altering move.
