Hopes for a Patriots reunion with Stefon Diggs just got a little lower.<\/p>\n
Former Buffalo Bills<\/a> wide receiver Stefon Diggs<\/a> has been cleared of criminal charges, but isn\u2019t in the clear with the NFL just yet.<\/p>\n Diggs was acquitted on the second day of his criminal trial on allegations that he assaulted a former personal chef in a dispute over money. The Massachusetts jury deliberated for less than two hours before finding the All-Pro wide receiver not guilty on all charges.<\/p>\n While the trial ended the legal peril for Diggs, a report pointed out that he could still face punishment from the NFL stemming from the incident.<\/p>\n Stefon Diggs Could Face Punishment From the NFL<\/p>\n Diggs had maintained his innocence leading up to this week\u2019s trial, and jurors found him not guilty after the defense team challenged the accuser\u2019s claim that Diggs had hit and choked her. But as The Associated Press noted, an acquittal is no guarantee that Diggs will avoid a suspension from the NFL.<\/p>\n \u201cSeveral NFL players, including Ben Roethlisberger<\/a>, Jameis Winston<\/a>,\u00a0and\u00a0Ezekiel Elliott, have been suspended for violating the personal-conduct policy despite not being arrested or charged with a crime,\u201d the report noted. \u201cRoethlisberger, the former Steelers quarterback was suspended six games \u2014 it was later reduced to four after an appeal \u2014 in 2010 following sexual assault accusations.\u201d<\/p>\n The report added that Winston was suspended for three games after a sexual assault allegation, while Elliott was suspended six games after the league investigated domestic violence allegations. Former Bills edge rusher Von Miller<\/a> was also suspended four games after allegations that he assaulted a longtime partner.<\/p>\n The Associated Press noted that the NFL has not publicly cleared Diggs, saying that his incident remains under investigation.<\/p>\n \u201cWe have been monitoring all developments in the matter which remains under review of the personal conduct policy,\u201d NFL spokesman Brian McCarthy said Tuesday.<\/p>\n Stefon Diggs Faces Other Allegations<\/p>\n Diggs still faces allegations in a civil lawsuit from a man claiming that Diggs had defamed him over allegations of a stolen luxury car.<\/p>\n \u201cIn the docs, a man who claims he used to work for Stefon says in July 2024, Stefon requested he arrange for Stefon\u2019s Ferrari to be transported from Miami to New York and then to Houston \u2026 but he says the Ferrari was stolen in Houston,\u201d a\u00a0report from TMZ<\/a>\u00a0noted. \u201cThe guy claims law enforcement concluded the Ferrari was stolen by third parties in a sophisticated theft \u2026 but he says Stefon started telling people in their circles that the guy stole the car.\u201d<\/p>\n Despite the uncertainty over his potential suspension, Diggs has still been named a top candidate to join several teams, including some Super Bowl contenders. CBS Sports writer Tyler Sullivan<\/a> suggested he would be a strong fit for the Los Angeles Rams<\/a>, giving the team a third target for quarterback Matthew Stafford<\/a>.<\/p>\n \u201cThe Rams had been hunting for a wide receiver to add alongside Puka Nacua<\/a> and Davante Adams<\/a> all offseason,\u201d Sullivan wrote. \u201cSo far, they haven\u2019t come away with one, opting to take Alabama quarterback Ty Simpson<\/a> at No. 13 overall instead of addressing that need.\u201d<\/p>\n \n\t\t\tNathan Dougherty<\/a> is a sports reporter covering the NFL for Heavy.com, with a focus on the Buffalo Bills, Detroit Lions and Miami Dolphins.
