{"id":65158,"date":"2025-08-12T23:36:14","date_gmt":"2025-08-12T23:36:14","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/65158\/"},"modified":"2025-08-12T23:36:14","modified_gmt":"2025-08-12T23:36:14","slug":"the-cbc-kids-reads-2025-longlist-is-here","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/65158\/","title":{"rendered":"The CBC Kids Reads 2025 longlist is here"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>CBC Kids Reads is back with the announcement of its longlist today.<\/p>\n<p>The third edition of &#8220;Canada Reads for kids&#8221; will celebrate five\u00a0of Canada&#8217;s best picture books.\u00a0The shortlist of five books in the running to be crowned this year&#8217;s champion will be revealed on Sept. 17.<\/p>\n<p>Each book\u00a0will be championed by a CBC Kids character\u00a0\u2014 Gary the Unicorn, Cottonball the Cat, Mr. Orlando the Moose, Stuffy the Dog and Mosey Monster \u2014 and read by a notable Canadian.<\/p>\n<p>The winner will be announced on a special TV broadcast on Saturday, Oct. 4,\u00a0on CBC TV and CBC Gem at 10:20 AM ET, in a live-to-tape special\u00a0recorded at the Civic Centre Resource Library in Vaughan, Ont., where an audience of kids and families will vote for the winning book.<\/p>\n<p>The special will also be replayed as a radio broadcast on Monday, Oct. 13.<\/p>\n<p>The 2025 longlist is:<\/p>\n<p>   Shark Girl\u00a0by Kate Beaton\u00a0   The Only Lonely Fairy by Lana Button, illustrated by Peggy Collins   So Loud! by Sahar Golshan, illustrated by Shiva Delsooz   Mad at Dad\u00a0by Janie Hao\u00a0   Benny and the Bananasaurus Rex by Sarabeth Holden, illustrated by Emma Pedersen   Cone Dog by Sarah Howden, illustrated by Carmen Mok\u00a0   How to Staycation Like a Snail by Naseem Hrab, illustrated by Kelly Collier   When You Meet a Dragon by Tanya Lloyd Kyi, illustrated by Udayana Lugo   The Mango Monster by Derek Mascarenhas, illustrated by Meneka Repka\u00a0   I am a Rock by Ashley Qilavaq-Savard, illustrated by Pelin Turgut\u00a0   Oh! When Shark Girl, who is part human and part shark, gets caught up in the nets of greedy Captain Barrett&#8217;s fishing boat, she realizes that the Captain is catching fish that he has\u00a0no intention of eating. A Vagrant<\/a>\u00a0online, which eventually turned into a bestselling book. M\u0101m\u0101n Bozorg, comes to visit from Iran and Rudy decides to try to be quieter for her grandmother but realizes she might be so loud too.\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbc.ca\/books\/so-loud-by-sahar-golshan-illustrated-by-shiva-delsooz-1.7168179\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">So Loud!<\/a>\u00a0is Rudy&#8217;s journey of embracing the noise and knowing when to take up space.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbc.ca\/books\/so-loud-by-sahar-golshan-illustrated-by-shiva-delsooz-1.7168179\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">So Loud!<\/a>\u00a0is for ages 4 to 7.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Sahar Golshan is a writer and filmmaker living in Mississauga, Ont. A little girl gets mad at her dad, but quickly realises she doesn&#8217;t like the feeling of being mad, except she doesn&#8217;t know how to stop it.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><a href=\"http:\/\/cbc.ca\/1.7318831\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Mad at Dad<\/a>\u00a0is for ages 2 to 6.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Janie Hao is an illustrator and writer. After eating bananas morning, noon and night, he becomes a Bananasaurus Rex and silly chaos ensues.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbc.ca\/books\/benny-the-bananasaurus-rex-1.6611634\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Benny the Bananasaurus Rex<\/a>\u00a0is for ages 3 to 5.<\/p>\n<p>Sarabeth Holden is an Inuk author who grew up between Nova Scotia, Nunavut, New Brunswick\u00a0and Ontario.
