Here, we take a look at the careers and lives of Italy\u2019s 2006 World Cup-winning squad today.<\/p>\n<p>GoalkeepersGianluigi Buffon<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/01k838kthz5fzb4xgdmk.jpg\" alt=\"Gianluigi Buffon\" title=\"Gianluigi Buffon\" width=\"3105\" height=\"2070\" class=\"undefined w-full w-full blur-[5px]\" q:id=\"7y\"\/><\/p>\n<p>Buffon is one of the best keepers in football history. | Getty\/Michael Regan<\/p>\n<p id=\"inline-text-8\" class=\"my-[18px] [&amp;_a]:text-primary my-f-1.5\" q:key=\"0\" q:id=\"82\">Italy\u2019s greatest ever goalkeeper and one of the finest the world has ever seen, Gianluigi Buffon started and finished every game at the 2006 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.si.com\/soccer\/world-cup-news\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">World Cup<\/a>, conceding just two goals in the entire tournament\u2014one against the United States in the group stage and one in the final against France.<\/p>\n<p id=\"inline-text-9\" class=\"my-[18px] [&amp;_a]:text-primary my-f-1.5\" q:key=\"0\" q:id=\"85\">He continued to play for Italy until 2018 and domestically until 2023, eventually hanging up his gloves for good after a spell back with his boyhood club, Parma.<\/p>\n<p id=\"inline-text-10\" class=\"my-[18px] [&amp;_a]:text-primary my-f-1.5\" q:key=\"0\" q:id=\"88\">Buffon recently served as the team coordinator for Italy\u2019s national side, but resigned from the role after the failure to qualify for the 2026 World Cup.<\/p>\n<p>Angelo Peruzzi<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/01kk1dhty9qxe2bm6dgf.jpg\" alt=\"Angelo Peruzzi\" title=\"Angelo Peruzzi\" width=\"3917\" height=\"2611\" class=\"undefined w-full w-full blur-[5px]\" q:id=\"8n\"\/><\/p>\n<p>Angelo Peruzzi. | IMAGO\/Nicolo Campo<\/p>\n<p id=\"inline-text-14\" class=\"my-[18px] [&amp;_a]:text-primary my-f-1.5\" q:key=\"0\" q:id=\"8r\">The oldest member of Italy\u2019s squad in 2006 at 36, Angelo Peruzzi didn\u2019t see any action at the tournament, spending the entire campaign on the bench behind Gianluigi Buffon. It proved to be his final involvement with the national team, and he retired soon after as a World Cup winner with 31 caps to his name.<\/p>\n<p id=\"inline-text-15\" class=\"my-[18px] [&amp;_a]:text-primary my-f-1.5\" q:key=\"0\" q:id=\"8u\">A stalwart for Juventus in the 1990s, Peruzzi has since held various coaching and administrative roles, most notably serving as team manager at former club Lazio\u2014a position he eventually left after falling out with president Claudio Lotito and sporting director Igli Tare.<\/p>\n<p>Marco Amelia<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/01kk1dxsh4s2phwrwtvj.jpg\" alt=\"Marco Amelia\" title=\"Marco Amelia\" width=\"4252\" height=\"2834\" class=\"undefined w-full w-full blur-[5px]\" q:id=\"99\"\/><\/p>\n<p>Marco Amelia made just nine appearances for Italy. | IMAGO\/Buzzi<\/p>\n<p id=\"inline-text-19\" class=\"my-[18px] [&amp;_a]:text-primary my-f-1.5\" q:key=\"0\" q:id=\"9d\">Marco Amelia\u2019s Italy career was almost as brief as his later spell at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.si.com\/soccer\/team\/chelsea\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Chelsea<\/a>, where he failed to make a single appearance after being signed as emergency backup for Thibaut Courtois. In fact, he fell out of the national team picture for a period between 2008 and 2011, meaning many of his 73 caps came later in his career.<\/p>\n<p id=\"inline-text-31\" class=\"my-[18px] [&amp;_a]:text-primary my-f-1.5\" q:key=\"0\" q:id=\"ar\">His playing days came to an end in 2019 after a hugely successful spell with Juventus, where he helped the club secure eight consecutive Serie A titles. Those issues struck again during the 2006 World Cup, when he suffered a hamstring injury in Italy\u2019s final group game against the Czech Republic, effectively ruling him out for the rest of the tournament.<\/p>\n<p id=\"inline-text-36\" class=\"my-[18px] [&amp;_a]:text-primary my-f-1.5\" q:key=\"0\" q:id=\"bd\">Nesta played just once more for the Azzurri after the World Cup before retiring from international soccer, though he continued domestically for several more years, finishing his career in India with Chennaiyin FC.<\/p>\n<p id=\"inline-text-37\" class=\"my-[18px] [&amp;_a]:text-primary my-f-1.5\" q:key=\"0\" q:id=\"bg\">Like many of his former teammates, Nesta moved into coaching after hanging up his boots, taking roles with Miami FC, Perugia, Frosinone, Reggiana and Monza, though success has largely eluded him.<\/p>\n<p>Marco Materazzi<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/01kj7swb4yjgyhywqmwt.jpg\" alt=\"Zidane headbutt\" title=\"Zidane headbutt\" width=\"6566\" height=\"4377\" class=\"undefined w-full w-full blur-[5px]\" q:id=\"bv\"\/><\/p>\n<p>Zidane&#8217;s headbutt on Marco Materazzi is infamous. | Getty\/John MacDougall<\/p>\n<p id=\"inline-text-41\" class=\"my-[18px] [&amp;_a]:text-primary my-f-1.5\" q:key=\"0\" q:id=\"bz\">Marco Materazzi is perhaps most famously remembered as the player headbutted by Zinedine Zidane in the 2006 World Cup final\u2014an incident that became the Frenchman\u2019s final act as a professional soccer player.<\/p>\n<p id=\"inline-text-42\" class=\"my-[18px] [&amp;_a]:text-primary my-f-1.5\" q:key=\"0\" q:id=\"c2\">That shouldn\u2019t overshadow his contribution to Italy\u2019s triumph, though.
