The man loves to dance\u2019 | Late-night TV roundup"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">On late night\u2019s Cinco de Mayo edition, hosts focused on the ballooning cost of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/us-news\/donaldtrump\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Donald Trump<\/a>\u2019s new White House ballroom, the return of the presidential fitness test and a fast-food employee who allegedly fired a gun at a customer for helping themselves to free soda.<\/p>\n<p>Jimmy Kimmel<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">After touching on Monday night\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/fashion\/met-ball\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Met Gala<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/tv-and-radio\/jimmy-kimmel\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Jimmy Kimmel<\/a> wondered if the glamorous event could have a home next year in Trump\u2019s new White House ballroom.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cOriginally he said it was cost $200m, and it would be financed by private donors,\u201d Kimmel said. \u201cThen the price tag doubled to $400m, which he said would still be paid for by private donors. Then yesterday, Republicans in the Senate pushed a bill that was allocate a billion dollars of taxpayer money to to go towards this project.\u201d The audience loudly booed.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">According to the judiciary committee, the increased funds would be used to heighten security in the wake of the recent shooting at the White House correspondents\u2019 dinner. \u201cA billion dollars for a ballroom\u201d, the host said despairingly. \u201cWhat can you say? The man loves to dance.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cThis is not a popular project,\u201d Kimmel continued, adding that only 28% of Americans support the endeavor. \u201cWhy does he need a room to hold balls? [\u2026] He\u2019s already holding <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/us-news\/jd-vance\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">JD Vance<\/a>\u2019s balls, he\u2019s got Lindsey Graham\u2019s balls, he\u2019s holding the balls of almost every Republican in Congress.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Kimmel then moved on to address news that Trump would be bringing back the presidential fitness test, which had previously been nixed during the Obama administration. \u201cHe wants kids to get in shape,\u201d the host said. \u201cHe said, \u2018If they don\u2019t get in shape, they\u2019ll never be able to marry a wealthy businessman.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">He then joked that, while the test used to judge fitness based on how many sit-ups you could do, now it will assess \u201chow many Wendy\u2019s tendies you can fit in your mouth\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cOnly <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/us-news\/donaldtrump\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" data-component=\"auto-linked-tag\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Donald Trump<\/a> would bring back a test that he has no chance of passing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Seth Meyers<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">On Late Night With Seth Meyers, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/tv-and-radio\/seth-meyers\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">the host<\/a> also focused on Trump\u2019s plans to bring back the presidential fitness test. On Tuesday, he announced the initiative at the White House in front of gathered schoolkids.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cIn front of a group of schoolchildren, President Trump claimed that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/iran\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Iran<\/a> would have launched a nuclear strike against the US and Israel if he hadn\u2019t started the war,\u201d Meyers said. \u201cSaid the kids, \u2018Uh, is this going to be on the test?\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cYou just know those kids were thinking, \u2018Yeah, but didn\u2019t President Obama reach a deal with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/iran\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" data-component=\"auto-linked-tag\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Iran<\/a> during his administration?\u2019\u201d Meyers joked. \u201cI mean, they were thinking it, but they were polite not to say it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">The host then moved on to discuss the latest seemingly AI-generated image posted by the White House: Trump dressed as the Mandalorian holding baby Grogu, to commemorate the unofficial <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/film\/starwars\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Star Wars<\/a> Day of 4 May (\u201cMay the fourth be with you,\u201d etc).<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cThe only thing I like about this image is that Grogu is looking at us like, \u2018Can you believe this shit?\u2019\u201d Meyers said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">The host concluded with news that Florida authorities had arrested a Taco Bell employee for allegedly firing a gun at a customer who filled up their water cup with soda. \u201cPolice are calling the man unstable, and Taco Bell are calling him employee of the month.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Stephen Colbert<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">On The Late Show, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/tv-and-radio\/stephen-colbert\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Stephen Colbert<\/a> wished audiences a happy Cinco de Mayo. \u201cFor those who don\u2019t know, Cinco de Mayo is the day a co-worker in a problematic hat is going to invite you out for margaritas,\u201d he joked.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cThis Cinco de Mayo is extra special because it happens to fall on Taco Tuesday,\u201d he added. \u201cTaco Bell is offering free Crunchwrap Supremes, and 7-Eleven has a Bogo on burritos. And I\u2019m guessing if you eat more than one 7-Eleven burrito, you Bogo-ing to the hospital.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Colbert then moved on to a segment called Hormuz Nuz U Can Uz, detailing new reports that the strait of Hormuz is again closed with more than 1,600 boats and 20,000 seafarers stranded. Yesterday, Iran hit the UAE with missiles for the second day in a row.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cThat is dangerous, not just for Middle East peace but to my parent corporation,\u201d said Colbert. \u201cParamount\u2019s bid to buy Warner Bros relies on $24bn in Gulf funds, including the L\u2019imad holding company, which is run by the crown prince of the UAE.
