Framber Valdez<\/a>\u2019s ejection on Tuesday night is going to cost him.<\/p>\n

Major League Baseball hit the Detroit Tigers<\/a> starter with a six-game suspension and an undisclosed fine on Wednesday. Tigers manager A.J. Hinch was assessed a one-game suspension and an undisclosed fine for Valdez\u2019s actions, too. Hinch will serve his suspension on Wednesday night.<\/p>\n

Valdez\u2019s suspension was later reduced to five games, likely because he either did not appeal or chose to drop an appeal<\/a>. He will be eligible to return on May 12.<\/p>\n

Valdez, however, did not see the suspension coming.<\/p>\n

\u201cI do not expect to get suspended,\u201d Valdez said on Tuesday night, via The Athletic<\/a>. \u201cIf it would have been on purpose, I would have gone towards the hitter, saying something, yelling something, threatening them or something like that, which didn\u2019t happen. I was just calm, just staying out of the situation. I let the benches clear, and nothing happened. I even left the field in a quiet way, because, of course, it was not on purpose.\u201d<\/p>\n

Valdez was thrown out of the Tigers\u2019 10-3 loss to the Boston Red Sox<\/a> on Tuesday night after he drilled Trevor Story<\/a> in the shoulder. That led to his immediate ejection, and sparked a benches-clearing incident.<\/p>\n

The benches-clearing moment didn\u2019t really lead to much. Story was held back and kept away from Valdez, and it ended up being a bunch of players standing around before the two sides were eventually separated.\u00a0When it comes to benches-clearing incidents, this one was undoubtedly on the tame end, as there was no brawl whatsoever.<\/p>\n

But the pitch in question came immediately after Valdez gave up back-to-back home runs. Willson Contreras<\/a> and Wilyer Abreu<\/a> each hit solo shots to start the fourth inning, which pushed the Red Sox\u2019s lead to eight runs at the time.<\/p>\n

It even drew criticism from Hinch.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe play a really good brand of baseball here. That didn’t feel like it,\u201d Hinch told the Detroit News\u2019 Chris McCosky<\/a>. \u201cI’m not judging intent. But I know when you go out on the field in those confrontations, you usually feel like you are in your right. It didn’t feel good being out there.\u201d<\/p>\n

Valdez\u2019s pitch was classified as a four-seam fastball at 94 mph. Valdez has thrown only a single four-seamer all season<\/a>. He told The Athletic<\/a> after the game that there was no ill-intent on the pitch, and called his ejection \u201ccompletely unfair.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cIt wasn\u2019t intentional or anything. Anybody can have a pitch get away from them in that situation,\u201d Valdez said through an interpreter.<\/p>\n

Valdez signed a three-year, $115 million deal with Detroit this past offseason. The 32-year-old holds a 2-2 record in eight starts this season with a 4.57 ERA. This is just the latest incident he\u2019s faced in his career. Valdez got into it with his own catcher<\/a>, C\u00e9sar Salazar<\/a> last season and actually hit Salazar in the chest protector. Valdez denied intentionally crossing up his catcher, though Salazar tried to get him to step off the mound just before he threw the pitch.<\/p>\n
