{"id":653877,"date":"2026-05-07T14:26:11","date_gmt":"2026-05-07T14:26:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/653877\/"},"modified":"2026-05-07T14:26:11","modified_gmt":"2026-05-07T14:26:11","slug":"gilbert-burns-signs-with-ufc-bjj-after-retiring-from-mma","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/653877\/","title":{"rendered":"Gilbert Burns signs with UFC BJJ after retiring from MMA"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1nfb3k4i _16w9vov1 _16w9vov0 ls9zuh1\">One-time UFC welterweight contender Gilbert Burns has inked a deal with UFC BJJ less than a month after retiring from MMA.<\/p>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1nfb3k4i _16w9vov1 _16w9vov0 ls9zuh1\">Multiple people with knowledge of the situation confirmed the news with MMA Fighting.<\/p>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1nfb3k4i _16w9vov1 _16w9vov0 ls9zuh1\">UFC BJJ is yet to officially announce the signing and a debut date, but the current plan is for \u201cDurinho\u201d to have his first match in the bowl in the coming months.<\/p>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1nfb3k4i _16w9vov1 _16w9vov0 ls9zuh1\">Turning 40 in July, Burns said after his final UFC appearance this past April at UFC Winnipeg, a main event loss to Mike Malott in Canada, that his <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mmafighting.com\/ufc\/483987\/gilbert-burns-post-retirement-plans-include-jiu-jitsu-competition-opening-own-gym-and-maybe-some-juice\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">MMA retirement plans included going back to jiu-jitsu<\/a> and working as an MMA manager, as well as running his own gym in the United States.<\/p>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1nfb3k4i _16w9vov1 _16w9vov0 ls9zuh1\">Burns went 15-10 under the UFC banner between 2014 and 2026 with key victories over Tyron Woodley, Demian Maia, Stephen Thompson, and Jorge Masvidal. He grappled a few times during his UFC stint, defeating the likes of Rafael Lovato Jr., Jake Shields, AJ Agazarm, and Gleison Tibau.<\/p>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1nfb3k4i _16w9vov1 _16w9vov0 ls9zuh1\">Prior to transitioning to mixed martial arts in 2012, Burns was a successful jiu-jitsu competitor, winning gold at the IBJJF World Championship in 2011 and capturing the 2010 IBJJF no-gi world title.
