{"id":654479,"date":"2026-05-07T20:43:16","date_gmt":"2026-05-07T20:43:16","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/654479\/"},"modified":"2026-05-07T20:43:16","modified_gmt":"2026-05-07T20:43:16","slug":"we-have-to-speed-up-vancouver-whitecaps-ceo-provides-key-update-on-relocation-rumors","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/654479\/","title":{"rendered":"\u2018We Have to Speed Up\u2019\u2014Vancouver Whitecaps CEO Provides Key Update on Relocation Rumors"},"content":{"rendered":"<p id=\"inline-text-0\" class=\"mt-[18px] md:mt-0 mb-[18px] [&amp;_a]:text-primary my-f-1.5\" q:key=\"0\" q:id=\"77\">VANCOUVER\u2014Vancouver Whitecaps CEO and Sporting Director Axel Schuster is choosing to remain hopeful about the club\u2019s future in Canada, despite the swirling concerns and rumors about relocation.<\/p>\n<p id=\"inline-text-1\" class=\"my-[18px] [&amp;_a]:text-primary my-f-1.5\" q:key=\"0\" q:id=\"7a\">\u201cI am concerned,\u201d Schuster told reporters in an hour-long roundtable on Wednesday, following reports of an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.si.com\/soccer\/official-las-vegas-buyer-adds-new-twist-to-vancouver-whitecaps-relocation-saga\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">offer from Grant Gustavson, the son of Kentucky billionaire Tamara Gustavson<\/a>, which includes the intention of moving the club to Las Vegas.\u00a0\u201cThat doesn\u2019t mean that I\u2019m not also hopeful that we will find the solution. I understand that everyone is concerned, but no one has to think that something is already done.\u201d<\/p>\n<p id=\"inline-text-2\" class=\"my-[18px] [&amp;_a]:text-primary my-f-1.5\" q:key=\"0\" q:id=\"7d\">\u201cThere\u2019s no deadline,\u201d he added. \u201c[But] we have to speed up to find the solutions, or to get, at least, to the point to see what is the best that we can get in certain categories.\u201d<\/p>\n<p id=\"inline-text-3\" class=\"my-[18px] [&amp;_a]:text-primary my-f-1.5\" q:key=\"0\" q:id=\"7g\">The 52-year-old <a href=\"https:\/\/www.si.com\/soccer\/vancouver-whitecaps-fc\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Whitecaps<\/a>\u2014one of North America\u2019s oldest active clubs\u2014have been on the market in the public realm since December 2024 and have been seeking a sale in the background for much longer. No Vancouver buyer has stepped up, despite over 100 groups showing interest, until potentially now.<\/p>\n<p id=\"inline-text-4\" class=\"my-[18px] [&amp;_a]:text-primary my-f-1.5\" q:key=\"0\" q:id=\"7j\">While Schuster addressed reporters Wednesday morning, British Columbia Jobs and Economic Growth Minister Ravi Kahlon, who is the primary handler on the Whitecaps file for the Provincial government, revealed that a local group had come forward hours later.<\/p>\n<p id=\"inline-text-5\" class=\"my-[18px] [&amp;_a]:text-primary my-f-1.5\" q:key=\"0\" q:id=\"7m\">\u201cWe just had a group that reached out to us, that\u2019s been organizing, apparently, for a few weeks to put a bid in for the Whitecaps,\u201d Kahlon told reporters.<\/p>\n<p id=\"inline-text-6\" class=\"my-[18px] [&amp;_a]:text-primary my-f-1.5\" q:key=\"0\" q:id=\"7p\">There are no details yet on the possible local buyer and whether or not they could make a legitimate bid.<\/p>\n<p>Revenue Shortfalls\u00a0Highlighted<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/01kqfxjz5ct23g74bgfx.jpg\" alt=\"Vancouver Whitecaps protests\" title=\"Vancouver Whitecaps protests\" width=\"360\" height=\"240\" class=\"undefined w-full w-full blur-[5px]\" q:id=\"87\"\/><\/p>\n<p>MLS\u2019s representation in Canada could be down to just two teams if the Whitecaps left. | Rich Lam\/Getty Images<\/p>\n<p id=\"inline-text-11\" class=\"my-[18px] [&amp;_a]:text-primary my-f-1.5\" q:key=\"0\" q:id=\"8b\">The primary issue in Vancouver remains a $40 million shortfall between them and what the average MLS side can spend, with the problem at its core being the increase in MLS team operating costs since the Whitecaps were granted expansion in 2009, while revenues have remained relatively flat.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p id=\"inline-text-12\" class=\"my-[18px] [&amp;_a]:text-primary my-f-1.5\" q:key=\"0\" q:id=\"8e\">Few MLS clubs are understood to be profitable or breaking even, despite lofty valuations. Chief among the shortfalls for Vancouver is the agreement with BC Place, the government-owned and crown corporation-operated venue.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p id=\"inline-text-13\" class=\"my-[18px] [&amp;_a]:text-primary my-f-1.5\" q:key=\"0\" q:id=\"8h\">The Whitecaps earn only 12% of matchday revenue\u2014compared to other teams and leagues making nearly 100% for owning their venues\u2014hampering the potential of matchday earnings, despite 19-straight games of over 20,000 fans and a recent turnout of over 27,500.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p id=\"inline-text-14\" class=\"my-[18px] [&amp;_a]:text-primary my-f-1.5\" q:key=\"0\" q:id=\"8k\">In addition to a more lucrative BC Place agreement, the Whitecaps need a new soccer-specific stadium\u2014and have a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.si.com\/soccer\/historic-mls-club-ambitious-stadium-plans-relocation-threat-looms\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">one-year Memorandum of Understanding with the City of Vancouver<\/a>, signed in December 2025, for a stadium at nearby Hastings Park. However, that project is increasingly unlikely to come to fruition without a new owner willing to take on the Forbes-estimated club value of $445 million, in addition to the new stadium costs.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Problems Beyond BC Place<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/01kq4cbyw5bnm9kfrfjs.jpg\" alt=\"BC Place \" title=\"BC Place \" width=\"360\" height=\"240\" class=\"undefined w-full w-full blur-[5px]\" q:id=\"8z\"\/><\/p>\n<p>The current situation at BC Place hampers the Vancouver Whitecaps.  | Elizabeth Ruiz Ruiz\/Getty Images<\/p>\n<p id=\"inline-text-18\" class=\"my-[18px] [&amp;_a]:text-primary my-f-1.5\" q:key=\"0\" q:id=\"93\">Schuster highlighted issues beyond the stadium as well, listing other factors hampering the club\u2019s position, including in-venue partnerships, corporate partnerships and efficient spending.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p id=\"inline-text-19\" class=\"my-[18px] [&amp;_a]:text-primary my-f-1.5\" q:key=\"0\" q:id=\"96\">\u201cThis isn\u2019t an easy problem to solve,\u201d he said. \u201cIf it were an easy problem to solve, we probably would have solved it&#8230;Even a new stadium, it&#8217;s like the same discussion we have with BC Place, it can\u2019t solve everything.\u201d<\/p>\n<p id=\"inline-text-20\" class=\"my-[18px] [&amp;_a]:text-primary my-f-1.5\" q:key=\"0\" q:id=\"99\">While Vancouver cannot draw on private sports gambling or private healthcare, as its U.S. counterparts can, due to local regulations, there remain several options to increase sponsorships.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p id=\"inline-text-21\" class=\"my-[18px] [&amp;_a]:text-primary my-f-1.5\" q:key=\"0\" q:id=\"9c\">Local commercial interest has improved in recent months, and the club is working through a checklist of roughly 30 marketing categories and further subcategories to open itself to any price point\u2014all while battling for sponsorship dollars with the local sports behemoth, the NHL\u2019s Vancouver Canucks.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p id=\"inline-text-22\" class=\"my-[18px] [&amp;_a]:text-primary my-f-1.5\" q:key=\"0\" q:id=\"9f\">Schuster confirmed that there have been several meetings between himself, two of the four-person Whitecaps ownership group, provincial officials and top-end MLS executives, with MLS Vice President Charles Altchek set to visit the city next week for further meetings.<\/p>\n<p id=\"inline-text-23\" class=\"my-[18px] [&amp;_a]:text-primary my-f-1.5\" q:key=\"0\" q:id=\"9i\">He also insisted that the club has not asked for any public funds and remains steadfast in keeping tickets at an affordable price point.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Sporting Side Remains Healthy, Save The Caps Movement Vital\u00a0<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/01kpmyz56864awvt8y15.jpg\" alt=\"Vancouver Whitecaps\" title=\"Vancouver Whitecaps\" width=\"360\" height=\"240\" class=\"undefined w-full w-full blur-[5px]\" q:id=\"9x\"\/><\/p>\n<p>The Vancouver Whitecaps are near the top of the Supporters\u2019 Shield table amid relocation concerns.  | Vancouver Whitecaps<\/p>\n<p id=\"inline-text-27\" class=\"my-[18px] [&amp;_a]:text-primary my-f-1.5\" q:key=\"0\" q:id=\"a1\">While the struggles continue off the pitch, the team is thriving on the field, sitting second in the Western Conference ahead of this week\u2019s matchup against the leading San Jose Earthquakes.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p id=\"inline-text-28\" class=\"my-[18px] [&amp;_a]:text-primary my-f-1.5\" q:key=\"0\" q:id=\"a4\">That form has nurtured the club\u2019s hope, with the team&#8217;s following and energy at a fever pitch.
