It measures your body’s ability to transport and use oxygen during aerobic exercise, such as running. The strength of your heart, your blood flow to muscles and the oxygen your cells consume are all reflected in your VO2 max. This directly indicates how fast you can run your next race; the higher your VO2 max, the easier it will be to hold fast paces for longer.

A great way to improve your VO2 max is to run intervals or other high-intensity training methods that elevate your heart rate. Your watch will not be 100 per cent accurate because it does not have the same data as an actual VO2 test will give you, but it’s a useful tool for understanding where your fitness is.

How is my heart rate varying?

There are so many acronyms found in that tiny computer, and your heart rate variability (HRV) is one of the most important ones to keep your eye on. It records the gaps between your heartbeats. Specifically, it’s a measure of the natural changes in tempo from one beat to the next, indicating how your body is adapting to your training load.

A high HRV generally means the body is recovering and adapting well to your workouts. Low HRV signifies poor recovery or excessive training stress, which can increase the risk of injury and overtraining. Watches can sometimes be inaccurate, so the best way to get more accurate readings is with a heart rate chest strap or armband. Your HRV helps you understand your overall fitness and health so that you can train responsibly (without hurting yourself).

What is my lactate threshold telling me?

Lactate refers to lactic acid, which breaks down glucose (sugars) and turns it into energy; lactate is the byproduct of this process. Your body recycles lactate back into energy, but as you start to run faster, your body produces more than it can handle (does not recycle fast enough). If your lactate threshold is 4:40 per km, then at that pace, your body produces lactic acid faster than it can clear it. This is what makes your legs feel heavy and makes it more difficult to run faster.

Tempo runs made simple

To improve performance, you can train your body to use its glucose more efficiently. There are many lactate threshold workouts to help increase it, such as sprint workouts or tempo sessions. Just be careful not to overdo it and give your body time to rest. This is where you circle back to HRV and monitor your training load to be sure your body can handle the intense workouts.

Your watch provides endless stats to help you understand performance and recovery, but since it doesn’t come with…

[6
49,48,231940,124827,7467,16850,242667,226,61,412
post-654634","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-technology","tag-ca","tag-canada","tag-hrv","tag-lactate-threshold","tag-performance","tag-recovery","tag-run-clubs","tag-smartwatch","tag-technology","tag-vo2-max
["GET
