Ottawa\u2019s Mathieu Chatelain insists he isn\u2019t a runner\u2013but this fall, he\u2019ll be attempting to run 100 km in less than 12 hours while raising $100,000 for The Ottawa Hospital Foundation<\/a>. In two weeks, on May 24, he will line up at the Tamarack Homes Ottawa International Marathon for his longest training run to date as he builds toward his 100K challenge.<\/p>\n

The Rockland, Ont., resident says the campaign idea came after a difficult period where he saw people in his community become seriously ill. \u201cI just grabbed my shoes and ran 17 km,\u201d Chatelain told Canadian Running. \u201cI bawled the whole time, thinking, \u2018I have to do my part.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n

Through the fundraiser, Chatelain hopes to support not just The Ottawa Hospital<\/a>, but the broader healthcare system and families navigating medical crises. \u201cHow can we, as a society, help another parent get back to their family?\u201d<\/p>\n

\nA small-world Ottawa Hospital connection<\/p>\n

Chatelain, 40, has long been connected to The Ottawa Hospital and Ottawa Marathon<\/a> community\u2013volunteering on race weekend, completing the half-marathon and supporting fundraising initiatives like Dancing with the Docs.<\/p>\n

During a fundraising breakfast, while listening to a patient share their brain tumour story, Chatelain became emotional, recalling the surgery his own father had when Chatelain was a child. As it turned out, the man seated beside Chatelain was Dr. David Schramm, the surgeon who had operated on his father 30 years earlier. \u201cHe even remembered the story,\u201d Chatelain said. \u201cThat really hit me.\u201d<\/p>\n

Preparing for the 100K challenge<\/p>\n

Chatelain is targeting a late-September attempt, when it isn\u2019t too hot. His longest training run to date has been about 35 km, and he\u2019s gradually increasing volume while managing chronic knee pain. The 42.2K, he says, comes at just the right time in his training.<\/p>\n

The Ottawa native has also incorporated meditation and long cold plunges into his routine to build mental toughness. \u201cIt\u2019s all mental,\u201d Chatelain said. \u201cI\u2019m going to keep pushing and keep learning through experience.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cBecause of this challenge, I am a better person in so many ways,\u201d he said. \u201cThe journey has been unbelievable.\u201d<\/p>\n
