{"id":655939,"date":"2026-05-08T12:21:13","date_gmt":"2026-05-08T12:21:13","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/655939\/"},"modified":"2026-05-08T12:21:13","modified_gmt":"2026-05-08T12:21:13","slug":"todays-jobs-report-could-mark-the-start-of-a-new-normal-slower-growth","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/655939\/","title":{"rendered":"Today\u2019s jobs report could mark the start of a new normal: Slower growth"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmovv5glh00053b6routpjqlt@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            When the April jobs report is released at 8:30 a.m. ET, it is expected to show that the US labor market added 65,000 positions.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmovv5gli00063b6r739vf9lf@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            If so, that\u2019s roughly one-third of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2026\/04\/03\/economy\/us-jobs-report-march\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">178,000 jobs<\/a> created in March.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmovv5gli00073b6reiamkggt@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            While in comparison the April total may seem like a sharp deceleration or a tepid month of employment growth, when viewed in isolation, it could seem solid or resilient \u2014 maybe even normal.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmovv5gli00083b6rc4mzxhlk@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            There are plenty of logical explanations for the stark shift and the undulating payroll numbers for the first few months of 2026; however, there\u2019s also something much bigger afoot: The job market is in the throes of an evolution.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmovv5gli00093b6rwcwcixvd@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cThe labor market is absolutely transforming, and it\u2019s not going to look the same as our pre-2020 trends,\u201d Nicole Bachaud, a labor economist at ZipRecruiter, told CNN in an interview.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmovv5gli000a3b6rlh3g03ig@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            There\u2019s not a clear picture yet, she said, of what the new normal is.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmovv5gli000b3b6r6pr7vi86@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The US job market and the broader economy have been subject to a slew of exogenous shocks during the past six years \u2013 chief among them being a once-in-a-century global pandemic.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmovv5gli000c3b6r6ddfrizh@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            In the backdrop, however, is a series of changes more structural in nature (some of which have even been helped along by those outside shocks):\n    <\/p>\n<p>            The US population is aging. Labor force growth is slowing as members of the large Baby Boomer cohort retire; industries such as health care and social services have greatly expanded as a result.<\/p>\n<p>            There\u2019s been a sharp reduction in net immigration. Trump administration policies of immigration restrictions and mass deportations have shifted the trajectory of what was a decades-long driver of labor supply. This shift also reduces labor demand through a drop in consumer spending.<\/p>\n<p>            Technological innovations, notably artificial intelligence, are reshaping jobs, industries, and the economy. Although still early days, the adoption of AI is contributing to changes in the occupational mix; has been directly cited as a reason (or, perhaps, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2026\/03\/31\/business\/ai-jobs-big-tech\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">scapegoat<\/a>) for layoffs; and has shown potential to influence economy-shaping dynamics such as productivity and wages.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmovv5gli000f3b6rbbdvg36g@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Getting a firm read on the labor market in 2026 has been like riding a roller coaster: The economy added an estimated 160,000 jobs in January and lost 133,000 jobs in February before bouncing back to that March total. (These monthly tallies are still subject to revision.)\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmovv5gli000g3b6room5kt5u@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The volatility can be partly attributed to several factors, including weather, labor strikes, lower-than-typical post-holiday layoffs, and recalibrations to how the Bureau of Labor Statistics estimates payroll changes at new and closed businesses (referred to as the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bls.gov\/web\/empsit\/cesbd.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">birth-death model<\/a>).\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmovv5gli000h3b6r8ipze1ai@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Those fluctuations in the top-line payroll number could very well continue in the months to come, largely because of the birth-death model changes, said Joe Brusuelas, chief economist at RSM US.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmovv5gli000i3b6rgn2i2pqz@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cIn fact, we moved away from really placing an emphasis on any given month, and we\u2019re looking at a smooth three-month average now,\u201d he said.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmovv5gli000j3b6r5qjczawo@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            From January through March, the average monthly gain is sitting at 68,333.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmovv5gli000k3b6rbl5mp567@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The consensus estimates, at 65,000 jobs added, fall right in line with that average.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmovv5gli000l3b6rkpxsy6mb@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The unemployment rate is expected to remain at 4.3%, FactSet estimates show.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmovv5gli000n3b6r5w6h1iyc@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            April\u2019s projected job growth, however, is likely still running \u201cabove trend,\u201d noted Gregory Daco, chief economist at EY-Parthenon, which is forecasting a total of 45,000 jobs were added last month.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmovv5gli000o3b6rh3nd3gda@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cThe expected April gain should still surpass the breakeven pace needed to keep unemployment steady, which means the unemployment rate is likely to tick down to 4.2%,\u201d Daco wrote in a note to investors on Wednesday.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmovv5gli000p3b6r7nadzjba@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The \u201cbreakeven\u201d rate is the number of monthly jobs added to keep the unemployment rate stable.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmovv5gli000q3b6rgh2qxryc@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            And largely because of the three structural factors outlined above (though AI currently to a lesser extent than the other two), the economy doesn\u2019t need to add as many jobs as it once did to keep unemployment from rising.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmovv5gli000r3b6rfshrtbb9@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Because these major shifts are still ongoing, economists and policymakers alike are still trying to home in on that breakeven rate.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmovv5gli000s3b6rowatfn6s@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Brusuelas, for example, puts his \u201cspeed limit for hiring\u201d right now at about 25,000 jobs per month.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmovv5glj000u3b6r7xnyrwi2@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Plenty of those exogenous factors remain at play: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2023\/06\/08\/economy\/labor-hoarding-economy\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Post-pandemic labor hoarding<\/a> practices are still <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2026\/03\/31\/economy\/us-jolts-job-openings-layoffs-february\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">unwinding<\/a>; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2026\/03\/29\/economy\/us-job-market-thaw-middle-east-war\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">high uncertainty<\/a> (triggered by the likes of inflation, tariffs, policy shifts, geopolitical developments and interest rates) has stifled hiring and possibly ushered along some AI adoption; and the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2026\/04\/30\/economy\/us-demand-destruction-iran-war\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">potential outstanding effects from the Iran war and oil shock<\/a> on consumer spending patterns and input costs.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmovv5glj000v3b6r0olten4f@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            But for now, some of the frequent adjectives used to describe the labor market have been \u201csolid,\u201d \u201cresilient,\u201d and \u201csteady.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmovv5glj000w3b6r2ujpvway@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Consumer sentiment surveys, however, show workers and job seekers are more <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2026\/01\/27\/economy\/us-consumer-confidence-january\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">downbeat<\/a>. The \u201clow-hire, low-fire\u201d labor market has made it harder for some people to get jobs and has resulted in a slowdown of wage gains (which <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2026\/04\/10\/business\/live-news\/us-cpi-march-inflation-iran\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">could soon be outstripped by inflation<\/a>).\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmovv5glj000x3b6rirdmx2ue@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The latest data released this week shows the ongoing labor market dynamics haven\u2019t changed dramatically.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmovv5glj000y3b6rkm48s44g@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The Job Openings and Labor Turnover Survey revealed that hiring bolted higher in March after falling to near-historic lows the month before. Job openings, a closely watched measurement of labor demand, fell for the second consecutive month.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmovv5glj000z3b6rfb8chfr2@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Weekly initial jobless claims, a closely watched proxy for layoffs, haven\u2019t escalated and remain near pre-pandemic levels, Department of Labor data shows.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmovv5glj00103b6r41l2ke72@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Last week, there were an estimated 200,000 first-time claims for unemployment insurance benefits, according to the data released Thursday. That\u2019s an increase of 10,000 filings from the prior week, which was revised up by 1,000 claims to 190,000, the lowest since 2022.
