Residents are invited to kick off\u00a0cycling season\u00a0this weekend as La\u00a0Bikerquerie\u00a0<\/a>opens its doors for another year of community bike repairs, family activities, and affordable cycling support.\u00a0<\/p>\n

The season opener takes place May 9 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., and founder Wade Wiebe says visitors can expect plenty to see and do throughout the day.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cWe’ve been working over the winter stockpiling bikes that are used bikes that had been donated, and then we fix them up and sell them to raise funds for our nonprofit.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

Additionally, he says there will be free hotdogs and drinks, activities for kids, and free bike tune-ups and instructions\u00a0at the La\u00a0Bikequerie\u00a0garage\u00a0located\u00a0at\u00a036016 MB-52<\/a>,\u00a0off of\u00a0Hirschfeld Road.\u00a0<\/p>\n

A hands-on approach to bike repairs\u00a0<\/p>\n

Wiebe says La\u00a0Bikerquerie\u00a0operates differently from a traditional bike shop because the focus is on teaching people how to repair their own bikes.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cIt’s\u00a0a community bike repair shop. So,\u00a0it’s\u00a0not the kind of place where you come and drop off your bike and then pick it up the next day or whatever with the work done. You come with your own bike and\u00a0you’re\u00a0willing to get your hands dirty.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

He says volunteers will be on hand to help guide people through repairs, especially those who are new to bike maintenance.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cWe charge $10 an hour for stand time. And again,\u00a0that’s\u00a0just to keep the lights on.\u00a0We have all the tools that you could possibly need unless you’re doing really high-end stuff.\u00a0But even at that, we have some volunteers who are experienced in hydraulic brakes and all this too.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

Encouraging more people to ride\u00a0<\/p>\n

According to Wiebe, the organization\u2019s larger goal is to make cycling more accessible and help keep older bikes on the road.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cSometimes it can cost as much money to fix a bike as it would to buy a new one. We like the idea of repairing some of the bikes that are already out there, which\u00a0actually a\u00a0lot of the old bikes are sometimes better quality than a new entry-level bike. So, getting those bikes back on the road is a win for everybody.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

He says cycling has continued to grow in popularity over recent years, not only as a way to save money, but because people genuinely enjoy it.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cOnce you do it, especially early in the morning,\u00a0it’s\u00a0the best way to show up at work,\u00a0having had\u00a0some exercise and fresh air and you feel ready to go.\u00a0It’s\u00a0better than a cup of coffee. I can tell you that.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

Wiebe adds that cycling infrastructure has also improved significantly over time.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cFor example, there are more dedicated bike lanes, especially\u00a0Winnipeg is\u00a0going a long way in that direction. Steinbach is too. I would say that the\u00a0real answer\u00a0is because\u00a0it’s\u00a0fun. Like it really is.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

Common bike problems\u00a0<\/p>\n

One of the most common issues La\u00a0Bikerquerie\u00a0sees involves worn-out cables.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cCables are a consumable item on a bike and sometimes people\u00a0don’t\u00a0realize that. They just\u00a0get\u00a0old. They get rusty and the brakes start getting sticky. We wonder why that might be, and\u00a0it’s\u00a0just because the cables are rusty and need to be replaced. At La\u00a0Bikeqerie,\u00a0it’s\u00a0a $4 part.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

Family Bike Jam returns later this month\u00a0<\/p>\n

La\u00a0Bikerquerie\u00a0is also preparing for the return of the Family Bike Jam later in May.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cWe partner with Strong Town Steinbach.\u00a0We’ve\u00a0done this for the last three years, and every year we have more people coming out.\u00a0It’s\u00a0just a slow,\u00a0easy ride.\u00a0Everybody’s\u00a0welcome, all ages.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

Wiebe says the event takes place Saturday, May 30 at 6:45 p.m., beginning at E.A. Friesen Park beside the Jake Epp Library.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cIt’s\u00a0just\u00a0a great way\u00a0to see Steinbach and to go down paths that you\u00a0can’t\u00a0access with a car. Sometimes\u00a0we’ll\u00a0take back ways and in ways that some people have never been even if they\u00a0living\u00a0in Steinbach for a long time.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n
