Husky-voiced Welsh singer Bonnie Tyler was in an induced coma Friday in a hospital in Portugal after emergency surgery, a spokesperson said.<\/p>\n
The 74-year-old star, best known for her 1983 mega-hit \u201cTotal Eclipse of the Heart,\u201d was operated on earlier in the week at a hospital in Faro in southern Portugal.<\/p>\n
The singer \u201chas been put into an induced coma by her doctors to aid her recovery,\u201d a spokesperson said Friday.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe know that you all wish her well and ask for privacy at this difficult time, please.\u201d<\/p>\n
Tyler shot to fame in the 1970s with hits including \u201cLost in France\u201d and \u201cIt\u2019s a Heartache.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cTotal Eclipse of the Heart\u201d later topped the charts in both Britain and the United States.<\/p>\n
The Grammy-nominated Tyler, who was born Gaynor Hopkins, was due to start a European tour on May 22 in Malta, to mark 50 years since the release of \u201cLost in France,\u201d which was her breakthrough hit in 1976.<\/p>\n
Other concert dates have been planned for Germany, the Czech Republic and Turkey, with a final show planned in Cardiff in December.<\/p>\n
Other hits include \u201cHolding Out For A Hero\u201d in 1984, which featured on the soundtrack to the huge US box office success \u201cFootloose\u201d.<\/p>\n
In 2013, Tyler represented the U.K. in the Eurovision Song Contest in Malmo, Sweden, with the song \u201cBelieve In Me,\u201d finishing in 19th place.<\/p>\n
