Surrey forked out $124,100 in Community Events Policing Grants last year under a program designed to help ease the financial burden on community organizations for policing their free-admission parades, festivals and other events.<\/p>\n
The maximum grant per eligible event is $55,000. The City of Surrey received nine applications from groups last year which included sports tournaments, large parades and cultural festivals. <\/p>\n
A committee of representatives from the Surrey Police Service, bylaws enforcement, risk management, finance and parks, recreation and culture departments review all applications and recommends who gets what to offset their policing costs.<\/p>\n
The City\u2019s Special Events Regulation By-law sets the level of police resources assigned to special events at two officers for events of up to 500 people, and another officer for each additional 250 anticipated attendees though commanding officers can reduce the number of officers.<\/p>\n
The program doesn\u2019t apply to ticketed admission events and eligibility is also restricted to non-profit groups that have been established for more than a year.<\/p>\n
