With a win over Dakota Ridge in the first round of the Class 4A playoffs<\/a> Thursday, Windsor girls soccer\u2019s playoff run is off to the races.<\/p>\n

But a pair of athletes on the team \u2014 coincidentally, the Wizards\u2019 two top goal scorers \u2014 have been off to the races all season.<\/p>\n

Along with starring in soccer, junior Tatum Gentry and freshman Maya Aguilar have also carved out quite a niche for themselves in track and field.<\/p>\n

\u201cI think both coaches give a little, and we give a little,\u201d Gentry said. \u201cBecause everybody knows we\u2019re going to show up and give 100% no matter what.\u201d<\/p>\n

In addition to playing midfield and leading the Wizards in scoring (Windsor\u2019s stats are not updated, so an exact total is not available), Gentry also participates in the 4\u00d7100 and 4\u00d7200-meter relays, long jump and the 100-meter dash.<\/p>\n

Aguilar is a striker for the soccer team and also runs the 100, 200, 400, 300-meter hurdles, long jump and any relay the team needs her in.<\/p>\n

\u201cI kind of do a lot of events,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n

Both \u2014 along with Kiana Cumings and Maya Brasch \u2014 were part of the 4\u00d7100 relay that tied a state record<\/a> (46.41) last month at the Randall Hess Roughrider Invite in Johnstown.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s a lot of give and take on a lot of people\u2019s parts,\u201d Lordemann said. \u201cCoaches are giving and taking. Players are giving and taking on both teams, right? \u2026 So it\u2019s a testament to those two kids, it\u2019s a testament to our program and it\u2019s a testament to the rest of our girls, because it\u2019s hard when they aren\u2019t at practice sometimes. But our team has been very gracious about all of it.\u201d<\/p>\n

Though running track may mean some missed soccer practices \u2014 and vice versa \u2014 the time spent training their speed and quickness is obvious on the soccer pitch.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhen you see it in person, it\u2019s just different,\u201d Lordemann said of how fast Gentry, Aguilar and the rest of the Wizards team. \u201cYou can see it on tape. And you\u2019re going to plan for it on tape. But when you have to deal with it in person, it\u2019s a different beast.\u201d<\/p>\n

Both Gentry and Aguilar agree that there are transferable skills, especially when racing another player to a ball on the pitch.<\/p>\n

\u201cI think the quick speed that you have to step to a ball in soccer is like how you have to accelerate fast in track,\u201d Aguilar said. \u201cDuring soccer, sometimes I think, \u2018Use your track speed. Just go at it. Be fast.\u2019 \u201d<\/p>\n

And \u201cfast is fast,\u201d Lordemann said. But the skills needed for each sport are far from a one-to-one comparison.<\/p>\n

\u201cIn the track world, it\u2019s straight ahead, right?\u201d Lordemann said. \u201cIn the soccer world, we hate straight ahead. Give me speed all day long, but there\u2019s not that much that honestly correlates.\u201d<\/p>\n

Gentry all-but-echoed her coach\u2019s sentiment.<\/p>\n

\u201cFor soccer, you\u2019re changing speed and changing directions, where you barely do that for track unless it\u2019s on a curve,\u201d Gentry said. \u201cSo I feel in soccer, it\u2019s almost a little bit harder. You\u2019re changing speed. You\u2019re going diagonal. You\u2019re checking the other way and then going straight. So you\u2019re using more of your bodily abilities to be able to make that quick change.\u201d<\/p>\n

Gentry did both her freshman year, but decided to focus just on soccer as a sophomore last year. But with Aguilar joining the Wizards this year, the two friends \u2014 who know each other from attending middle school together at Frontier Academy in Greeley \u2014 dove back into both.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis year, because Maya was with us, I wanted to do both again because I knew I had a buddy,\u201d Gentry said.<\/p>\n

Along with having a friend on each team \u2014 which isn\u2019t a given at a school the size of Windsor with more than 1,100 students \u2014 it also gave both someone else who understands their unique situation.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s hard to make those connections on both teams,\u201d Aguilar said. \u201cBut going in, being able to have each other and understand it makes it a lot easier.\u201d<\/p>\n

Gentry, Aguilar and the rest of the Windsor girls soccer team, ranked No. 9 in the bracket, will make the long drive to Grand Junction on Saturday to play the eighth-seeded Tigers<\/a>.<\/p>\n

The game is set to begin at 5 p.m. at Community Hospital Unity Field, 1840 N. 12th St., Grand Junction, on the campus of Colorado Mesa University.<\/p>\n

The Wizards are 11-3-2 overall after their first-round win.
