The Toronto Blue Jays<\/a> have managed to stay in the middle of the pack in the American League despite an overwhelming amount of injuries to their starting rotation.<\/p>\n

Toronto’s offense, led by Vladimir Guerrero Jr., plays a vital role in its success, but it’s difficult for any club to overcome such drastic setbacks.<\/p>\n

“If the Blue Jays continue to dig their way out of an early-season hole, it wouldn’t hurt to reinforce the rotation,” FanSided’s Christopher Kline<\/a> wrote Friday. “Cody Ponce is done for the year. Shane Bieber won’t be back any time soon, either. Dylan Cease is pitching like a Cy Young candidate, while Kevin Guasman and Trey Yesavage round out an excellent postseason top three.<\/p>\n

“[Freddy] Peralta can serve as the cherry on top.”<\/p>\n

Peralta, playing on an expiring contract with the New York Mets<\/a> after an offseason trade, is one of the more durable starters in the Majors and is off to a solid start with his new NL club, posting a 3.12 ERA in his first eight starts.<\/p>\n

But the Mets are floundering, and 670 The Score’s Bruce Levin reports<\/a> that they’ve already engaged in trade discussions with the Chicago Cubs<\/a> surrounding Peralta.<\/p>\n

“Peralta is historically quite durable, and after a top-five finish in NL Cy Young voting, he offers the star pedigree a spend-happy Blue Jays front office can reward in free agency,” wrote Kline. “Toronto’s ability to compete on the open market in free agency \u2014 while building upon their foundation as reigning AL champs \u2014 makes it a real, viable destination.”<\/p>\n

The Blue Jays could also negotiate a long-term extension with Peralta, something the Mets have done unsuccessfully.<\/p>\n
