Ottawa police confirmed Saturday that a two-year-old child died following a dramatic river rescue Friday evening.<\/p>\n
In a release, police said they were called shortly before 7 p.m. on reports of a missing child in the area of Remic Rapids near the Kichi Zibi Mikan parkway.<\/p>\n
\u201cA coordinated search was immediately launched involving multiple Ottawa police resources,\u201d including neighbourhood resource team, marine dive team, air support and assistance from Gatineau police.<\/p>\n
Police said the child was spotted in the Ottawa River by air support teams about 40 minutes after the initial call.<\/p>\n
The child was brought to shore and paramedics began lifesaving efforts before the child was transported to hospital.<\/p>\n
The child was later pronounced deceased at hospital.<\/p>\n
\u201cOur hearts are with the child\u2019s family, loved ones, witnesses, and all those affected by this heartbreaking incident,\u201d police said in the release on Saturday.<\/p>\n
\u201cThis was an incredibly difficult call for everyone involved, including the first responders who worked tirelessly in the search-and-rescue efforts.\u201d<\/p>\n
Police said \u201cas is standard practice in incidents involving the death of a young child, (the) homicide unit has carriage of the investigation, alongside the Sexual Assault and Child Abuse Unit.\u201d<\/p>\n
Support services have been made available for the child\u2019s family and personnel involved in the response.<\/p>\n
The investigation remained ongoing.<\/p>\n
