As construction season kicks off, the City of Winnipeg says it is \u201cpaving the way\u201d for improvements to roads, sidewalks and active transportation routes across the city.<\/p>\n
A total of $156.8 million has been budgeted for street improvements this year, covering a wide range of infrastructure work.<\/p>\n
Throughout the season, crews will complete work on 175 lane kilometres of roads, 50 sidewalk locations, and 15 kilometres of bike lanes and active transportation pathways.<\/p>\n
City officials say all projects are either already underway or set to begin shortly.<\/p>\n
Winnipeg Mayor Scott Gillingham says the investment reflects what residents have been asking for.<\/p>\n
\u201cWinnipeggers want better roads, and we\u2019re putting real money behind that work,\u201d Gillingham said.<\/p>\n
\u201cI know construction can be frustrating, but this work means smoother roads, safer sidewalks, and better routes for drivers, cyclists, pedestrians, and transit users across the city.\u201d<\/p>\n
Councillor Janice Lukes, chair of the Standing Policy Committee on Public Works, says the work is necessary to improve mobility across Winnipeg.<\/p>\n
\u201cThis work is necessary, and it will make it much easier for Winnipeggers to safely get around our city,\u201d Lukes said.<\/p>\n
Active transportation projects included in renewal program<\/p>\n
The Regional and Local Street Renewal program includes several active transportation projects aimed at expanding and improving cycling and pedestrian infrastructure.<\/p>\n
Key projects include:<\/p>\n
\n\tEdmonton Street bike lane: As part of CentrePlan 2050, protected bike lanes are being constructed on the west side of Edmonton Street.
\n\tSherbrook Street bike lane upgrade: The existing painted bike lane from Broadway to Cumberland Avenue is being upgraded into a fully protected bike lane.
\n\tNorthwest Hydro Corridor, Phase 2: This phase extends the pathway from Church Avenue to Selkirk Avenue, and from Leila Avenue to Daylan Marshall Gate Park.

Major road renewal projects<\/p>\n
Several major corridors are also included in this year\u2019s renewal program:<\/p>\n
\n\tDowntown streets: Edmonton Street, Kennedy Street and St. Mary Street are scheduled for renewal.
\n\tSt. Mary\u2019s Road: Work from PTH 100 to the Floodway will renew the corridor from the South Perimeter to the Floodway, complementing provincial work on the St. Mary\u2019s Interchange and the PR 200 Floodway Bridge replacement.
\n\tLagimodiere Twin Overpass rehabilitation and roadworks: The project includes bridge rehabilitation along Lagimodiere Boulevard, along with new active transportation paths on Concordia Avenue and Lagimodiere Boulevard to close gaps in the network.
