But the captain and face of the men’s program likely won’t play in CanMNT’s June 12 opener.

Bayern Munich confirmed on Friday that star left back Alphonso Davies would miss several weeks with a left hamstring injury suffered Wednesday during Bayern Munich’s Champions League semi-final exit to PSG. Davies provided a late assist to Harry Kane in the second leg as Bayern’s comeback fell short. He has once again fallen on the trainer’s table for what’s likely to be four to five weeks.

The injury issues have been endless for the 25 year-old since he tore his ACL last March on the turf at Sofi Stadium in Los Angeles while on international duty. Amid the plague of injuries the CanMNT has dealt with this year, the latest Davies setback is by far the most devastating.

“Physically, I’m not worried about him. He’ll be back and everything will be fine. But mentally, it’s extremely tough,” Bayern manager Vincent Kompany said on Saturday after Bayern’s 1-0 win away to Wolfsburg.

“These small injuries that keep coming back are difficult to deal with. We’ll see what happens regarding the World Cup. We’re helping and supporting him. I’d just look Phonzie in the eye and tell him to keep going. There’s no other way. He shouldn’t be afraid. Fear is the biggest enemy in this kind of situation.”

Canadians may struggle to feel empowered by the Belgian’s fearlessness. The idea of the CanMNT playing a World Cup without Canada’s most talented player is terrifying.

Courtesy: Sean Pollock/Canadian Soccer Daily

Related Read: Canada’s left back options if Alphonso Davies misses the World Cup?

But, just how bad is it?

“I’m hearing a great degree of concern coming from Bayern,” German football expert Raphael Honigstein told TSN’s Park The Bus on Friday. “Because this is the third time his hamstrings been a problem since he’s come back from his ACL. Every time he got the all clear to play again, he literally got injured the moment he stepped back on the pitch.”

That is the devastating reality of the last seven months for the Canadian superstar. On Wednesday against PSG, Davies played just one half of action. Yet 45 minutes proved too much for Phonzie’s hampered hammies.

“If there’s any doubt over his fitness Bayern will be very wary of allowing Canada to rush him back after what happened with the ACL a year ago,” Honigstein said. “I can see this developing into a bit of a tussle with both medical departments perhaps not having the similar opinion.”

Bayern were furious with Canada Soccer after Davies was flown back to Germany misdiagnosed last March after the CONCACAF Nations League third place match against the United States. Flying with a ACL rupture is incredibly dangerous with potentially life threatening consequences. Thankfully Davies made it to Munich and was correctly diagnosed, but the German club and Davies’ agent traded jabs with Canada Soccer before Marsch and Canada Soccer CEO Kevin Blue flew to Munich to smooth things over.

Related Read: Alistair Johnston: ‘I’ve learned my lesson’ about hamstring injury recovery

Now with the clock ticking fast before the biggest match in the history of the CanMNT program, nerves on this side of the Atlantic are completely shot. With a four to five week recovery projection, Davies may not even get a training session in before Canada’s opener in Toronto against Bosnia.

“I think best case scenario, they’ll get him fit, and he’ll come in maybe for the second or third game, if Canada, they’ll go beyond that. I think he’s got a realistic chance, but for the first game, I think it’s going to be very, very tight.“

It’s hard to believe Davies hasn’t played for Canada since March of 2025. But, without a doubt he’ll do everything he possible can to be fit to play for his country at the World Cup.

Canada’s historic World Cup kicks off in just one month.
