Brooks Koepka was the most excited he\u2019s been playing golf in more than three years during the back nine of Saturday\u2019s third round at the ONEflight Myrtle Beach Classic.<\/p>\n

And that\u2019s for good reason.<\/p>\n

The five-time major winner made five birdies as well as an eagle on the par-5 13th that spearheaded a back-nine 29. His 7-under 64 moved him to 11 under for the tournament, five back at day\u2019s end.<\/p>\n

\u201cThat\u2019s the most excited I\u2019ve been playing golf in a long, long time. I can tell you that much,\u201d Koepka told reporters after his lowest round of the year. \u201cIt\u2019s, I would say back until \u201923, the PGA. That\u2019s the most \u2014 it\u2019s been a long time since I\u2019ve had fun playing golf.<\/p>\n

\u201cFor at least a year, I\u2019ve been very \u2014 I was very frustrated last year,\u201d he added. \u201cJust wasn\u2019t in a good place, but I think a lot of times when you \u2014 it\u2019s like anybody, right? If they\u2019re happy off the golf course, they\u2019re going to play well on the golf course. I think that\u2019s a huge, huge piece of it, and I\u2019ve found that. Re-found my happiness, my love for the game. All the pieces are connected. It\u2019s just now I\u2019ve got to go out and go play.\u201d<\/p>\n

Koepka, who has been a heavily-referenced example in recent debates on how former LIV Golf players might make their way to the PGA Tour<\/a>, said that he\u2019s tried tuning out the noise and focusing on playing good golf which he noted \u201ctakes care of a lot.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cMaybe to everybody else, but to me I just look at it as a process of the whole thing,\u201d he said to a question about whether winning this week would mean more than other victories. \u201cI don\u2019t know when I expected to get into elevated events, whatever it is, but I said it earlier in the week, good play takes care of itself.\u201d<\/p>\n

Koepka\u2019s previous low was 65 this season in front of his home crowd at the Cognizant<\/a>, and since then he has spent considerable time waiting to get into signature events. First there was Harbour Town<\/a> the week following the 2026 Masters (which Koepka finished T-12). <\/p>\n

And two weeks later \u2014 after missing the cut alongside Shane Lowry at the Zurich in between<\/a> \u2014 Koepka was at the center of another game of \u201calternate-in-waiting\u201d at the Cadillac Championship in Doral<\/a>.<\/p>\n

The patience paid off Saturday in Myrtle Beach when the crowds ushered him in the clubhouse with cheers.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt just felt like our whole group, the gallery, got twice the size,\u201d Koepka said about building momentum during his run on the back nine. \u201cI love that. They\u2019ve been fantastic. They\u2019ve been super supportive all week, and it\u2019s fun to kind of get those feels of playing good. The crowd is growing. The energy is kind of with me.\u201d<\/p>\n

Koepka tried to kept the focus on the present, but did say he felt his putter was in better shape heading into next week\u2019s PGA Championship<\/a> than it was a month ago at Augusta.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt will be something I\u2019ve been looking forward to for a while,\u201d said the three-time Wanamaker Trophy winner. \u201cI feel like I\u2019ve been knocking on the door. It\u2019s very close. It\u2019s one piece here, one piece there. Short game wasn\u2019t quite there at Augusta. Putted OK, but the short game now is starting to come around.\u201d<\/p>\n

He was very pleased with his irons on Saturday in South Carolina, and believed they would follow him north to the suburbs of Philadelphia where Aronimink Golf Club<\/a> awaits a 156-player field. <\/p>\n

\u201cToday was honestly the best ball-striking day I\u2019ve had out in a while,\u201d Koepka said. \u201cIt\u2019s nice to see, because I feel like \u2014 we were talking yesterday. I feel like I haven\u2019t shot 6 under, 7 under, 8 under in a long time. I know a lot of that is because of the putter, but hopefully this can kind of translate into tomorrow and then into next week, and then you just build that momentum and ride the wave.\u201d<\/p>\n
