Tage Thompson<\/a> and Rasmus Dahlin<\/a> each had a goal and an assist, and Alex Lyon<\/a> made 31 saves for Buffalo, which is the No. 1 seed from the Atlantic.<\/p>\n

Montreal leads the best-of-7 series 2-1. Game 4 will be here\u00a0on Tuesday (7 p.m. ET; ESPN, SN, CBC, TVAS).<\/p>\n

\u201cThey\u2019re a skilled team,\u201d Thompson said. \u201cThey\u2019ve got a lot of players that can make plays and score. They don\u2019t need a whole lot to put it in the back of the net. I think we\u2019ve been opening it up a little bit too much, taking a bit too many risks off the rush. Obviously, we like when our ‘D’ are joining and getting involved in the play, but we\u2019ve got to be smart when we do it, pick our times, and the forwards have got to be better when they are in there and tracking back.\u201d<\/p>\n

Thompson put the Sabres up 1-0 when he scored 53 seconds into the first period. Dahlin\u2019s shot from the point caromed off the end boards, hitting Canadiens defenseman Alexandre Carrier<\/a>\u2019s right leg and changing direction before Thompson put away the rebound in front.<\/p>\n

Newhook tied it 1-1 at 15:31 with his first goal of the game. After battling with Buffalo defenseman Bowen Byram<\/a> for possession behind the net, Newhook came out front and put away the rebound of Evans\u2019 shot, which hit off the stick of Sabres\u00a0defenseman Conor Timmins<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Caufield put Montreal up 2-1 with a power-play goal at 6:05 of the second period. After a tap-in opportunity went wide of the left post in the opening minute of the period, Caufield made no mistake on another chance at an open net after Hutson set him up in front.<\/p>\n

It was his second goal of the playoffs after scoring 51 during the regular season.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m just trying to build off these last couple of games,\u201d Caufield said. \u201cObviously, it\u2019s tight out there, there\u2019s little room, but when there is, you\u2019ve got to take advantage of that.
