Winnipeg’s road construction season is starting, and this year, one of the city’s focuses will be on adding more active transportation routes.\u00a0<\/p>\n
Throughout the spring, summer, and fall construction season, the city will be fixing major roadways, reconstructing sidewalks, and adding more bike lanes for people choosing active transportation.\u00a0<\/p>\n
“Winnipeggers want better roads, and we\u2019re putting real money behind that work,” said Mayor Scott Gillingham in a press release. “Our six-year capital plan includes more than $1.1 billion for road renewal, including nearly $157 million this year.”<\/p>\n
This Year’s Projects<\/p>\n
The road construction the city is focusing on in 2026 will include:\u00a0<\/p>\n
\n\t175 lane kilometres of roads
\n\t50 sidewalk locations
\n\t15 kilometres of bike lanes and active transportation pathways
<\/p>\n
Roadway construction has already begun across Winnipeg.\u00a0<\/p>\n
“I know construction can be frustrating, but this work means smoother roads, safer sidewalks, and better routes for drivers, cyclists, pedestrians, and transit users across the city.\u201d<\/p>\n
The Areas Affected in Winnipeg\u00a0<\/p>\n
The focus for bike lanes across Winnipeg in 2026 will be:\u00a0<\/p>\n
\n\tEdmonton Street bike lane \u2013 As part of CentrePlan 2050, we are constructing protected bike lanes on the west side of Edmonton Street.
\n\tSherbrook Street bike lane upgrade \u2013 We are upgrading the painted bike lane from Broadway to Cumberland Avenue to be a fully protected bike lane.
\n\tPhase 2 of Northwest Hydro Corridor \u2013 This phase includes the extension of the corridor pathway from Church Avenue to Selkirk Avenue, and from Leila Avenue to Daylan Marshall Gate Park.

“Each summer, our folks responsible for road construction have just a few short months to complete hundreds of millions of dollars of work on everything from major reconstructions and rehabilitations to building bike lanes and repairing sidewalks,” said Councillor Janice Lukes, Chair of the Standing Policy Committee on Public Works. “This work is necessary, and it will make it much easier for Winnipeggers to safely get around our city.”<\/p>\n
The roads that will have major reconstruction this summer will be:\u00a0<\/p>\n
\n\tDowntown Streets \u2013 Streets included for renewal this year are Edmonton Street, Kennedy Street, and St. Mary Street.
\n\tSt. Mary\u2019s Road from PTH 100 to the Floodway \u2013 This project, renewing St. Mary\u2019s Road from the South Perimeter to the Floodway, will complement work completed by the Province on the St. Mary\u2019s Interchange and the PR 200 Floodway Bridge Replacement.
\n\tLagimodiere Twin Overpass Rehabilitation and Roadworks \u2013 The bridge rehabilitation project includes the renewal of Lagimodiere Boulevard. New active transportation paths will be constructed on Concordia Avenue and Lagimodiere Boulevard to close gaps in the AT network.
