The Citadel Theatre\u2019s 2025\/2026 season\u00a0concludes with a gorgeous new adaptation of\u00a0Edmond Rostand<\/a>\u2019s 1897 romantic drama,\u00a0Cyrano de Bergerac.\u00a0Directed by\u00a0Amanda Goldberg\u00a0and written by Jessy Ardern, this\u00a0world premiere\u00a0follows\u00a0a\u00a0clever French swordsman\/poet, Cyrano.\u00a0He is well\u00a0known by his fellow townspeople for\u00a0his\u00a0sharp\u00a0wit,\u00a0often-reckless\u00a0bravery,\u00a0and,\u00a0much to his chagrin, his\u00a0extremely prominent nose.\u00a0He\u00a0quietly\u00a0yearns for his\u00a0childhood friend, Roxane,\u00a0only to be devastated when she confesses her love for\u00a0a handsome soldier named Christian.\u00a0Heartbroken, Cyrano\u00a0reluctantly acts as messenger between Roxane and\u00a0Christian.\u00a0After\u00a0witnessing\u00a0Christian\u2019s\u00a0awkward\u00a0attempts to\u00a0woo Roxane, Cyrano\u00a0offers to write Roxane love letters, pretending to be Christian.\u00a0<\/p>\n

At the heart of the production is Scott Shpeley<\/a>\u2019s humorous and heartbreaking portrayal of Cyrano.\u00a0Whether dueling an angry\u00a0nobleman\u00a0or penning a\u00a0tear-stained\u00a0letter on a battlefield,\u00a0Shpeley\u2019s Cyrano is compelling in his earnestness and a protagonist to root for.\u00a0Starring opposite him is Stephanie Sy<\/a> as the charming, quick-witted aristocrat,\u00a0Roxane.\u00a0Like Cyrano, Roxane\u00a0openly expresses\u00a0vulnerability,\u00a0longing\u00a0to be loved and respected\u00a0as she truly is.\u00a0She\u00a0is captivated by\u00a0the equally infatuated\u00a0Christian (Darren Martins), meeting with him in secret while evading an unwanted admirer: the sleazy, married Comte\u00a0de\u00a0Guiche\u00a0(Brian Hamman). Though Roxane is vigilant, she also counts on her\u00a0stern, bonnet-wearing, pistol-toting chaperone, Marie (Megan McArton).\u00a0<\/p>\n

From the moment the curtain rises,\u00a0Cyrano de Bergerac\u00a0immerses the audience in 1640s France.\u00a0Beyata Hackborn\u2019s sets evoke the grit of\u00a0taverns,\u00a0alleyways, and\u00a0battlefields; the\u00a0tavern\u2019s\u00a0flickering, tiered\u00a0chandeliers\u00a0and cathedral-like arches are particularly striking. Deanna Finnman\u2019s\u00a0striking,\u00a0often-intricate\u00a0costumes\u00a0include\u00a0feathered hats,\u00a0sherbet-coloured\u00a0gowns, billowing cloaks, and bow-adorned shoes.\u00a0The clever script brims with\u00a0swoon-worthy declarations and\u00a0sly\u00a0turns of phrase\u00a0that\u00a0are\u00a0only occasionally\u00a0heavy-handed.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Until May 24, audiences are invited to fall in love with this\u00a0humorous and heartbreaking new production.\u00a0<\/p>\n
