{"id":663894,"date":"2026-05-12T06:34:25","date_gmt":"2026-05-12T06:34:25","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/663894\/"},"modified":"2026-05-12T06:34:25","modified_gmt":"2026-05-12T06:34:25","slug":"ottawa-steps-in-with-another-60m-to-bankroll-ekati-sale-process","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/663894\/","title":{"rendered":"Ottawa steps in with another $60M to bankroll Ekati sale process"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The same federally backed corporation that already loaned Ekati $175 million is offering up another $60 million to keep the lights on while the insolvent diamond mine tries to find a buyer.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Ekati owner Arctic Canadian Diamond Company (ACDC), a subsidiary of Australian-owned Burgundy, <a href=\"https:\/\/cabinradio.ca\/288979\/news\/economy\/mining\/inside-ekatis-insolvency-heres-the-full-scale-of-the-problem\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">entered creditor protection<\/a> at the start of the month with huge debts.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The mine is still operational but forecast to lose tens of millions of dollars in the months ahead because natural diamond prices have cratered.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In fresh court documents made public on Monday, ACDC began trying to find someone to buy Ekati \u2013 and the federal government put up a fresh $60-million loan to keep the mine running while that happens over the next half a year.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As a result, Ottawa is now both the mine\u2019s largest creditor and the lifeline keeping it open. <\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align:center\">Advertisement.<br \/><a class=\"gofollow\" data-track=\"NzgxLDE1LDYw\" href=\"https:\/\/ykhemp.ca\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/April-2-2026-2026-Trade-Show-Ad.gif\" width=\"300px\"\/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align:center\">Advertisement.<br \/><a class=\"gofollow\" data-track=\"MTkzMCwxNSw2MA==\" href=\"https:\/\/www.yk1.nt.ca\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/Mar-17-2026-YK1-Registration-Ad-Eng-Fr-26_27.gif\" width=\"300px\"\/><\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">More than $200 million in taxpayer money has been committed to Ekati in the past six months, but the situation has only worsened so far. Jobs have been lost and the cash flow picture for the next half a year is grim \u2013 the mine expects to burn through almost the entire $60 million in new financing just to keep operating through November.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The British Columbia court in charge of the insolvency process has extended a stay until late July, meaning the mine has until at least that time to show progress in rearranging its finances. Creditors can\u2019t make claims while the stay is in place.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The stay buys ACDC and a court-appointed monitor \u2013 FTI Consulting \u2013 time to shop Ekati around for a buyer. A timeline presented to the court expects final bids by September 25 and a deal to close by November 6, assuming a serious bidder can be found.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In an affidavit, Burgundy head of finance Brent Mierau acknowledged the pool of possible buyers is \u201crelatively limited.\u201d He said another federally backed loan was \u201cthe most viable option\u201d available for the time being.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align:center\">Advertisement.<br \/><a class=\"gofollow\" data-track=\"MjA0MiwxNiw2MA==\" href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.nt.ca\/ecc\/en\/services\/take-family-land\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/1777855454_761_Apirl-20-updated-image-0135_D_600x500_L1_Take-a-Family-on-the-Land_Eng.jpg\" width=\"300px\"\/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align:center\">Advertisement.<br \/><a class=\"gofollow\" data-track=\"MjA1NywxNiw2MA==\" href=\"https:\/\/northwordsnwt.com\/en\/2026-northwords-nwt-writers-festival\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/1778567665_329_Northwords-2026-Festival-600x500-V2.png\" width=\"300px\"\/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Environmental warning<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Canada Enterprise Emergency Funding Corporation \u2013 the entity that has issued all of Ekati\u2019s federally backed loans \u2013 plans to send the latest $60 million in chunks, starting with up to $10 million available from this week.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The remaining $50 million is only released if CEEFC is satisfied with initial letters of intent received from prospective bidders by July 10.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The loan comes with a 14.5-percent interest rate.
