For 50 years, the Royal Canadian Mint\u2019s Winnipeg facility has quietly powered Canada\u2019s circulation coinage while supplying coins to more than 80 countries around the world. What began in 1976 as a bold Prairie expansion project has evolved into one of the world\u2019s most sophisticated minting operations.<\/p>\n

In this feature, Canadian Coin News explores the remarkable rise of the Winnipeg plant \u2014 from its futuristic pyramid-shaped architecture to its role as the backbone of Canada\u2019s coin production system. Today, the facility can strike up to 20 million coins a day using advanced multi-ply plated steel technology developed in-house.<\/p>\n

The story also examines how the Mint has positioned Winnipeg as a global leader in contract coinage, producing more coins for international clients than for the Canadian market itself. Alongside massive production capabilities, the site now houses specialized painting operations and a research-focused Centre of Excellence dedicated to advancing minting technology.<\/p>\n
