{"id":66494,"date":"2025-08-13T12:49:08","date_gmt":"2025-08-13T12:49:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/66494\/"},"modified":"2025-08-13T12:49:08","modified_gmt":"2025-08-13T12:49:08","slug":"space-traffic-management-enters-a-new-era-with-cream-project","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/66494\/","title":{"rendered":"Space traffic management enters a new era with CREAM project"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>As Earth\u2019s orbit grows increasingly congested, the European Space Agency (ESA) is stepping up efforts to safeguard satellites and preserve the long-term sustainability of space.<\/p>\n<p>With more than 11,000 active satellites currently circling the planet, and tens of thousands more expected in the coming years, plus <a href=\"https:\/\/www.esa.int\/Space_Safety\/Space_Debris\/ESA_Space_Environment_Report_2025\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">over 1.2 million pieces of debris larger than 1 cm<\/a>, the challenge of avoiding in-orbit collisions has become a daily operational reality.<\/p>\n<p>To meet this space traffic management challenge head-on, ESA is advancing a cutting-edge initiative: the Collision Risk Estimation and Automated Mitigation (CREAM) project, a pivotal component of its <a href=\"https:\/\/www.esa.int\/Space_Safety\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Space Safety Programme.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>A new approach to space traffic management<\/p>\n<p>Traditional collision avoidance requires satellite operators to manually assess potential threats, design manoeuvres, and coordinate with other operators \u2014 a time-consuming and often fragmented process.<\/p>\n<p><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-60741\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/The_cost_of_avoiding_collision-300x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"401\" height=\"401\"  \/>Credit: ESA<\/p>\n<p>Communication between stakeholders can be ad hoc and inconsistent, sometimes complicating decisions.<\/p>\n<p>The CREAM system aims to transform this. By automating many aspects of collision risk assessment, manoeuvre planning, and coordination, it offers a streamlined, technology-driven approach to space traffic management.<\/p>\n<p>The goal is to reduce false alerts, speed up decision-making, and significantly cut operator workload while boosting overall mission safety.<\/p>\n<p>Connecting the global space community<\/p>\n<p>One of CREAM\u2019s most ambitious features is its ability to connect a wide network of stakeholders, from satellite operators and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.innovationnewsnetwork.com\/challenges-of-space-based-space-situational-awareness\/34979\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">space situational awareness<\/a> service providers to regulators and observers.<\/p>\n<p>This interconnected ecosystem enables faster, more transparent decision-making, especially when two active satellites \u2013 rather than inert <a href=\"https:\/\/www.innovationnewsnetwork.com\/tackling-space-debris-with-a-drydock\/52546\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">space debris<\/a> \u2013 are on a collision course.<\/p>\n<p>In some cases, the system could even negotiate manoeuvre agreements between operators with minimal human involvement.<\/p>\n<p>If disputes arise, CREAM can escalate them to a mediation service, ensuring fairness and flexibility while keeping space assets safe.<\/p>\n<p>From ground tests to orbit<\/p>\n<p>Launched in 2020, the CREAM project has now reached a crucial milestone. Under the leadership of GMV, with contributions from Guardtime, the system\u2019s core components are being integrated into a unified platform.<\/p>\n<p>Currently ground-based, the prototype can already generate collision alerts, propose actionable avoidance manoeuvres, and support inter-operator coordination. The next step is an expanded pilot phase, where more decision-support technologies will be added.<\/p>\n<p>In parallel, ESA is preparing in-orbit demonstrations, including \u2018piggyback missions\u2019 where CREAM will be carried as a digital payload and a dedicated mission to test its full capabilities in real space conditions.<\/p>\n<p>Supporting space sustainability standards development<\/p>\n<p>Beyond immediate collision avoidance, CREAM could help shape the future of space traffic management regulations.<\/p>\n<p>Establishing \u2018rules of the road\u2019 in orbit has long been hindered by a chicken-and-egg dilemma: rules are hard to enforce without the technology to apply them, and technology adoption lags without clear rules.<\/p>\n<p>By embedding CREAM onboard spacecraft, operators could seamlessly comply with emerging best practices and international norms.
