BALTIMORE \u2014 Anthony Volpe is back in the majors.<\/p>\n
The New York Yankees recalled Volpe from Triple-A Scranton\/Wilkes-Barre on Tuesday and placed shortstop Jos\u00e9 Caballero on the 10-day injured list with a right middle finger fracture.<\/p>\n
Last week, the club optioned Volpe to the minors after the 25-year-old completed his rehab assignment, a jarring move considering he was the Yankees\u2019 starting shortstop for the past three seasons.<\/p>\n
Caballero injured his finger during Sunday\u2019s road game against the Milwaukee Brewers while sliding back to first base on a pickoff attempt. He pinch ran in the ninth inning Monday against the Baltimore Orioles after the training staff deemed him available to run, but the plan was for him to undergo an MRI and see a hand specialist in New York on Tuesday.<\/p>\n
The imaging revealed a \u201csmall fracture,\u201d with no damage to the tendons or ligaments, Yankees manager Aaron Boone said.<\/p>\n
Boone said Caballero fought to avoid going on the IL. He was able to hit in the batting cage without issue on Monday, but his throwing did not feel right. The Yankees believe that, with a few days off to let the fracture heal, the injury should be a \u201cnon-issue\u201d when he returns.<\/p>\n
\u201cTen days, that\u2019s the max I\u2019m taking,\u201d Caballero said of how long he expects to be out.<\/p>\n
After the Yankees\u2019 6-2 win over the Orioles on Tuesday night, Caballero said, \u201cnine days to go,\u201d as he walked out of the clubhouse. Caballero said he won\u2019t throw or hit for five to seven days, but he can still field in the meantime. He\u2019s able to bend his finger and is only wearing a compression bandage for protection.<\/p>\n
With Caballero out, the Yankees plan to start Volpe at shortstop over Max Schuemann, who started at the position Tuesday and was 1-for-3 and was caught stealing twice. Volpe was not in Tuesday\u2019s lineup because he had not arrived in Baltimore in time. Boone said that Volpe was an option off the bench.<\/p>\n
Volpe has struggled at the plate in the minors, posting a .570 OPS in 68 at-bats. He\u2019s chased 36.3 percent of pitches outside of the strike zone, according to FanGraphs, a sign he has not seen the ball well since initially beginning his rehab assignment on April 14, as he\u2019s worked back from left shoulder surgery in the offseason.<\/p>\n
\u201cHe hasn\u2019t gotten a lot of results yet,\u201d Boone said of Volpe\u2019s offense. \u201cHe\u2019s had a number of at-bats and a lot of reps. He\u2019s gotten more than a full spring training (of at-bats), so hopefully, he\u2019s ready to go and come up here and be a spark for us.\u201d<\/p>\n
Boone said it\u2019s his \u201cexpectation\u201d that Caballero will return to being the starting shortstop when he is healthy, adding that he has \u201cplayed as well as anyone out there.\u201d Caballero has been slightly above average at the plate, with a 105 wRC+, and excellent defensively, leading all major-league shortstops with 9 Defensive Runs Saved.<\/p>\n
Boone would not commit to Volpe remaining in the majors when Caballero returns, a sign this could be a short stay.<\/p>\n
\u201cIf I learned anything out of all this, it\u2019s that there\u2019s things I can\u2019t control and things I can,\u201d Volpe said. \u201cWe\u2019ve got a game tomorrow, and that\u2019s what I\u2019m focused on throughout this whole thing. It\u2019s been day to day for me, how I could get better, how I can improve. That\u2019s all I\u2019m focused on.\u201d<\/p>\n
This was always going to be the most pressure-filled year yet for Volpe because, for the first time since he debuted in 2023, the Yankees have a viable alternative to play shortstop. It\u2019s now on him to seize the moment, no matter how short or long his stay will be.<\/p>\n
\u201cHe knows what he\u2019s up here to do,\u201d Boone said of Volpe. \u201cHe\u2019s all about our team mission of we want to win it all and be the best we can be.
