{"id":666593,"date":"2026-05-13T11:56:54","date_gmt":"2026-05-13T11:56:54","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/666593\/"},"modified":"2026-05-13T11:56:54","modified_gmt":"2026-05-13T11:56:54","slug":"fiery-collision-between-tesla-and-valley-line-lrt-sends-1-to-hospital-shuts-down-overpass-edmonton","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/666593\/","title":{"rendered":"Fiery collision between Tesla and Valley Line LRT sends 1 to hospital, shuts down overpass &#8211; Edmonton"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A fiery collision between a <a href=\"https:\/\/globalnews.ca\/tag\/valley-line-lrt\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Valley Line LRT<\/a> train and a Tesla car has shut down a major overpass in south Edmonton.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/70c8fc80.png\" alt=\"\" style=\"position:absolute;width:1px;height:1px\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\"\/><\/p>\n<p>The crash Tuesday afternoon happened at the 75\/66 Street overpass over <a href=\"https:\/\/globalnews.ca\/tag\/whitemud-drive\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Whitemud Drive<\/a> just before 1 p.m.<\/p>\n<p>The Edmonton Police Service said the car was travelling north on 66 Street, approaching the Whitemud Drive overpass, while the LRT was headed in the same direction on the adjacent train tracks.<\/p>\n<p>The Tesla had a red light and was not supposed to turn right on it, but proceeded anyways onto the ramp down onto the Whitemud eastbound \u2014 turning directly into the path of the train.<\/p>\n<p>The LRT hit the Tesla, causing the electric vehicle to catch on fire as it was dragged alongside the train off the road and onto the grass beside it.<\/p>\n<p>Story continues below advertisement<\/p>\n<p>Edmonton Fire Rescue Services said crews arrived on scene less than 10 minutes later to find the car on fire.<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t\tA collision between a Valley Line LRT train and a vehicle on the Whitemud Drive overpass at 66 Street on Tuesday, May 12, 2026.\t\t\t\t <\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t\tCourtesy: Cheryl Doucet\t\t\t\t<\/p>\n<p>The vehicle appeared to be destroyed by the impact, and the fire sent thick, black smoke billowing into the sky.<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t\t<img decoding=\"async\" width=\"170\" height=\"225\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/1767930311_275_national.jpg\" alt=\"Get daily Canada news delivered to your inbox so you'll never miss the day's top stories.\"\/><\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t\tGet daily National news<\/p>\n<p>Get daily Canada news delivered to your inbox so you&#8217;ll never miss the day&#8217;s top stories.<\/p>\n<p>Passengers on the train who saw what happened told Global News the driver of the Tesla car had blood on them after the crash.<\/p>\n<p>The driver of the Tesla was taken to hospital by paramedics for precautionary reasons, while the passengers on the train were checked by paramedics and released on scene.<\/p>\n<p>EFRS said the fire was declared out at 2:07 p.m.<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t\tA collision between a Valley Line LRT train and a Tesla car on the Whitemud Drive overpass at 66 Street on Tuesday, May 12, 2026.\t\t\t\t <\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t\tGlobal News\t\t\t\t<\/p>\n<p>Police said the following road closures were in effect for the foreseeable future:<\/p>\n<p>Story continues below advertisement<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t66 Street northbound being diverted onto 41 Avenue75 Street southbound being diverted onto 51 AvenueBoth onramps from Whitemud Drive eastbound and westbound onto 66\/75 Street are closed<\/p>\n<p>Police said\u00a0Whitemud Drive eastbound and westbound is unaffected.<\/p>\n<p>\n\t\t\tMore on Traffic<br \/>\n\t\t\tMore videos\n\t\t<\/p>\n<p>The Edmonton Transit Service said Tuesday afternoon there was no estimate for when regular Valley Line train service will resume, but it is anticipated bus replacement service may continue into the evening.<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t\tA collision between a Valley Line LRT train and a vehicle on the Whitemud Drive overpass at 66 Street on Tuesday, May 12, 2026.\t\t\t\t <\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t\tCredit: City of Edmonton traffic camera\t\t\t\t<\/p>\n<p>Valley Line trains continue to run between Bonnie Doon Station and 102 Street stops, while bus replacement service is running between the Bonnie Doon and Mill Woods stops.<\/p>\n<p>The city said resumption of regular service will be communicated through standard ETS channels such as social media.<\/p>\n<p>No other details on the crash are available.<\/p>\n<p>Story continues below advertisement<\/p>\n<p>Global News has reached out to TransEd, which operates the low-floor train line from Mill Woods to downtown, and Edmonton Fire Rescue Services.
