{"id":666696,"date":"2026-05-13T12:58:14","date_gmt":"2026-05-13T12:58:14","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/666696\/"},"modified":"2026-05-13T12:58:14","modified_gmt":"2026-05-13T12:58:14","slug":"hockey-fever-reaches-those-in-montreal-shelters","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/666696\/","title":{"rendered":"Hockey fever reaches those in Montreal shelters"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>MONTREAL \u2013 Stephane Vallieres remembers going to the old Montreal Forum at age 12 to watch the Canadiens play the Quebec Nordiques like it was yesterday.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/70c8fc80.png\" alt=\"\" style=\"position:absolute;width:1px;height:1px\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\"\/><\/p>\n<p>On Tuesday night, he was among about two dozen people in the cafeteria of the Old Brewery Mission homelessness resource centre, near Montreal\u2019s Chinatown, tuning in to watch Game 4 of the Canadiens\u2019 second-round playoff series against the Buffalo Sabres.<\/p>\n<p>Some wore Habs jerseys and hats. Others wore red.<\/p>\n<p>Vallieres said game night is best enjoyed with a group.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe atmosphere here, the chemistry \u2026 we\u2019re here to have a good time,\u201d he said. \u201cWe\u2019re watching what everyone likes, and there\u2019s no arguing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Montrealers have caught hockey fever, and residents of the Old Brewery Mission\u2019s downtown shelter are no different.<\/p>\n<p>Story continues below advertisement<\/p>\n<p>While some watched from the cafeteria, others tuned in from the lounges on the upper floors. Even those getting their hair cut by barbers who drop in once a month kept their eyes glued to the screen as they got their trim.<\/p>\n<p>Vallieres is a lifelong Canadiens fan. His face lit up as he spoke about the team\u2019s roster, saying he believes the team is good enough to bring home the Stanley Cup this year. He said events like the NHL playoffs get his mind off things.<\/p>\n<p>Story continues below advertisement<\/p>\n<p>Vallieres sat with his friend Allen Hayward, another diehard Canadiens fan who has been at the Mission for four years after losing his job in the construction sector during the COVID-19 pandemic.<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t\t<img decoding=\"async\" width=\"170\" height=\"225\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/1767930311_275_national.jpg\" alt=\"Get daily Canada news delivered to your inbox so you'll never miss the day's top stories.\"\/><\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t\tGet daily National news<\/p>\n<p>Get daily Canada news delivered to your inbox so you&#8217;ll never miss the day&#8217;s top stories.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt makes you temporarily forget that you\u2019re here, which is a gorgeous thing right there,\u201d he said of game nights.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt would be more fun to watch it with these people, but at my apartment.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>As the Canadiens took the lead in the first period, those gathered to watch the game broke into chants of \u201cOl\u00e9! Ol\u00e9! Ol\u00e9! Ol\u00e9!\u201d Even those not watching asked fans smoking outside in between periods about the game.<\/p>\n<p>Yolette Jean is used to picking up people who use the Mission\u2019s drop-in centre \u2014 where people can grab a coffee and food or take a nap \u2014 and driving them to other resources around the city.<\/p>\n<p>On Tuesday, barely anyone got in her shuttle, she said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI came to pick people up at Caf\u00e9 Mission, and they said, \u2018Ma\u2019am, no, no. Oh, we\u2019re fine here,&#8217;\u201d Jean said. \u201cThey said they\u2019re not interested; they want to watch the game.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\n\t\t\tMore on Sports<br \/>\n\t\t\tMore videos\n\t\t<\/p>\n<p>They asked her if she could bring back any donated Canadiens T-shirts or jerseys.<\/p>\n<p>James Hughes, director of the Mission, said the first thing he heard when he walked in Tuesday morning was, \u201cIt\u2019s going to be 4-2 tonight!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Story continues below advertisement<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s all anyone\u2019s talking about,\u201d he said. \u201cIt brings the mood up. It can be dark here. These are people who are isolated and struggling, people who have suffered enormous loss.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>But for a few hours, they share a common experience and love of the sport \u2014 and maybe even get to win, he adds.<\/p>\n<p>The Old Brewery Mission isn\u2019t the only place where those experiencing homelessness can catch the game.<\/p>\n<p>The CAP St-Barnab\u00e9 and the Welcome Hall Mission run shelters, transitional housing units and emergency service centres across the city.
