Tracy Dahl found out that she was one of the recipients of Manitoba\u2019s highest honours in an inauspicious way.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n
\u201cI\u00a0wasn\u2019t\u00a0aware when it happened except\u00a0all of a sudden, my phone started getting a lot of messages,\u201d she laughs.\u00a0<\/p>\n
The celebrated soprano\u00a0and University of Manitoba voice teacher\u00a0was one of twelve Manitobans named to the Order of Manitoba this week by Lieutenant Governor Anita Neville. The list also includes music superstar Chantal Kreviazuk, former premier Brian Pallister, Canada\u2019s chief public health officer Dr. Joss Reimer, and former Winnipeg Blue Bombers running back Andrew Harris.\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/p>\n

Amidst\u00a0all of\u00a0the accolades that Dahl has received in her career (including being invested as a Member of the Order of Canada in 2018), the Order of Manitoba feels extra special to her because of the\u00a0connection that it has to her community.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n
\u201cTo bring it back down and place it at home, that I think is really very special,\u201d she says, \u201cbecause this is the place I call home. This is where I chose to live through my whole career. And that feels\u00a0really lovely.\u201d<\/p>\n

Dahl notes that the placement of\u00a0herself and Kreviazuk amongst\u00a0all\u00a0the other recipients and their accomplishments\u00a0shows the\u00a0special value\u00a0that Manitoba places on the arts. \u201cI\u00a0think it\u00a0is well known outside of Manitoba… that we\u2019re kind of a cultural capital here in Canada,\u201d she\u00a0says. \u201cWe cherish [the arts] here and\u00a0that\u2019s\u00a0why they thrive.\u00a0It\u2019s\u00a0important to the province,\u00a0it\u2019s\u00a0important certainly to the city of Winnipeg and each community to find their way of supporting that thriving arts community.\u201d<\/p>\n

As Dahl\u2019s career has taken her across Canada and around the world, one thing that she has always taken with her is the power of community.\u00a0She credits being raised in Manitoba\u2019s supportive music ecosystem for her signature\u00a0personal touch, with everything from the Winnipeg Music Festival to performances at the Corn & Apple Festival in Morden\u00a0demonstrating\u00a0the value that her community has given to her art.\u00a0Her and her husband Raymond Sokalski have\u00a0remained\u00a0here in Winnipeg throughout her career, raising their sons and building relationships with neighbours and friends. That support is something that Dahl thinks has shone through her artistry no matter what stage she finds herself on.\u00a0<\/p>\n
\u201cIt\u2019s about the relationship you have with the other person,\u201d she explains. \u201cInstead of, \u2018Oh, my next job is here, here, here,\u2019 you know, \u2018How are you doing? Where are you from?\u00a0What\u2019s\u00a0your favourite place where\u00a0you’re\u00a0from?\u2019 We tend to be more personal, I think.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/p>\n

Three-time Olympic hockey medalist Jocelyne Larocque, orthopaedic surgeon Dr. Peter MacDonald,\u00a0Mondetta\u00a0Clothing CEO Ash Modha, Indigenous leader Diane Roussin,\u00a0former Children\u2019s Advocate of Manitoba\u00a0Elder Billie Schibler, WOW! Hospitality Group\u2019s Douglas Stephen, and electromagnetic innovator Dr. Lotfollah Shafai round out the 2026 Order of Manitoba recipients. The recipients will be officially invested at a ceremony at the Manitoba\u00a0Legislative\u00a0Building.\u00a0<\/p>\n
